Each month, most MER tables and figures present data for a new month. These data are usually preliminary (and sometimes estimated or forecasted) and likely to be revised the following month. The first dissemination of most annual data is also preliminary. It is often based on monthly estimates and is likely to be revised later that year after final data are published from sources, according to source data revision policies and publication schedules. In addition, EIA may revise historical data when a major revision in a source publication is needed, when new data sources become available, or when estimation methodologies are improved. A record of current and historical changes to MER data is available on the What's New in the Monthly Energy Review—Content Changes webpage.

Listed below are changes in Monthly Energy Review content. Only months with changes beyond the standard updates are shown.

Changes in 2025

  • September 2025 release
    1. We have revised our petroleum statistics in coordination with our Petroleum Supply Annual 2024. Revisions affect data series in Energy overview, Energy consumption by sector, Petroleum, Energy prices, Renewable energy, Environment, and Appendix A.
  • June 2025 release
    1. We added total energy expenditures data for 2023 and have revised data back to 2009 in coordination with our State Energy Data System 2023. Changes affect Primary energy consumption, energy expenditures, and carbon dioxide emissions indicators (Table 1.7).
  • April 2025 release
    1. We revised Heating degree days by census division (Table 1.11) and Cooling degree days by census division (Table 1.12) for 1949–2024.
    2. We have added new columns for exports and net imports to Renewable diesel fuel overview (Table 10.4b) and Other biofuels overview (Table 10.4c).
  • March 2025 release
    1. We revised world population statistics back to 1971, gross domestic product statistics back to 2019, and gross output statistics back to 1997, and we included data for 2024 in Population, U.S. gross domestic product, and U.S. gross output (Table C1). Revisions affect data in Primary energy consumption, energy expenditures, and carbon dioxide emissions indicators (Table 1.7).
    2. We revised sectoral consumption data for hydrocarbon gas liquids and distillate fuel oil in Petroleum Consumption by Sector (Table 3.7a, Table 3.7b, Table 3.7c), as well as heat content values for hydrocarbon gas liquids and distillate fuel oil (Table 3.8a, Table 3.8b, Table 3.8c) for 2023-2024. The revisions affect data in Energy consumption by sector, Environment, and Approximate heat content of petroleum consumption and fuel ethanol (Table A3).

Changes in 2024

  • June 2024 release
    1. We added a new table, Light-duty vehicle average miles traveled by technology type (Table 1.9), to the MER.
    2. We revised total energy expenditures data for 2011–2022 in coordination with our State Energy Data System 2022. Revisions affect data in Primary energy consumption, energy expenditures, and carbon dioxide emissions indicators (Table 1.7).
  • April 2024 release
    1. We revised Heating degree days by census division (Table 1.10) and Cooling degree days by census division (Table 1.11) for 1949-2023.
    2. We have removed the column for Angola from Petroleum Trade: Imports from OPEC countries (Table 3.3c) due to Angola's departure from OPEC.
    3. We added a zip file for each issue of the MER, which contains all the MER Excel tables in one location. The current month's zip file is available on the MER website, and the prior months are available in previous editions, as of January 2024.
  • March 2024 release
    1. Electricity end use and electric vehicle use (Table 7.6, formerly Electricity end use), now includes experimental estimates for electric vehicle use of electricity.
    2. We revised world population statistics in Population, U.S. gross domestic product, and U.S. gross output (Table C1) for 1950–2022 and included data for 2023.

  • August 2023 release
    1. We added Appendix F and Table F1, Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure. The new appendix presents data on number and type of electric vehicle charging locations and ports. Additionally, we have added a file with state level electric vehicle charging infrastructure data, as well as a file that contains the full charging infrastructure dataset. The appendix also has documentation describing our methodology and sources.
  • June 2023 release
    1. We added four new tables that present data on capacity factors and usage factors by fuel type. The new tables are Capacity Factors and Usage Factors at Electric Generators: Total (All Sectors) (Table 7.8a), Capacity Factors and Usage Factors at Electric Generators: Electric Power Sector (Table 7.8b), Capacity Factors and Usage Factors at Electric Generators: Commercial Sector (Table 7.8c), and Capacity Factors and Usage Factors at Electric Generators: Industrial Sector (Table 7.8d).
    2. We revised total energy expenditures data for 2010–2021 in coordination with our State Energy Data System 2021. Revisions affect data in Primary energy consumption, energy expenditures, and carbon dioxide emissions indicators (Table 1.7).

  • June 2022 release
    1. We revised total energy expenditures data for 2009–2020 in coordination with our State Energy Data System 2020. Revisions affect data in Primary energy consumption, energy expenditures, and carbon dioxide emissions indicators (Table 1.7).
    2. We moved transportation sector biomass consumption from Table 10.2b, Renewable energy consumption: industrial sector (formerly, Renewable energy consumption: industrial and transportation sectors) to Table 10.2c, Renewable energy consumption: transportation and electric power sectors (formerly Renewable energy consumption: electric power sector) and split the Other transportation column into Renewable Diesel Fuel and Other Biofuels.
  • April 2022 release
    1. We have revised Heating degree days by census division (Table 1.9) and Cooling degree days by census division (Table 1.10) for 1949–2020.
  • February 2022 release
    1. We have expanded Table 5.1, Crude oil and natural gas drilling activity measurements, to include rotary rigs in operation by trajectory (horizontal, directional, vertical).
    2. We have redesigned Table 5.2, Crude oil and natural gas wells and footage drilled (formerly Crude oil and natural gas exploratory and development wells), to include wells drilled by trajectory and footage drilled by type and trajectory. Data for 2011 forward have been added, and data for 1975–2010 have been revised.

  • September 2021 release
    1. We have revised the monthly and annual statistics for the supply and disposition of crude oil and petroleum products for 2011–2020 in coordination with our Petroleum Supply Annual 2020 Volume 2. These revisions affect data series in Energy overview, Energy consumption by sector, Petroleum, Renewable energy, and Environment.
    2. We have replaced Natural gas trade by country (previously Table 4.2) with Natural gas imports by country (Table 4.2a) and Natural gas exports by country (Table 4.2b).
    3. We have incorporated revised CO2 emissions factors into the MER. These revisions affect data series in Environment.

    1. We have revised total energy expenditures data for 2010–2019 in our State Energy Data System 2019. Revisions affect data in Primary energy consumption, energy expenditures, and carbon dioxide emissions indicators (Table 1.7).

    1. Petroleum consumption: transportation and electric power sectors (Table 3.7c) and Heat content of petroleum consumption: transportation and electric power sectors (Table 3.8c) now include new columns for other petroleum consumption in the transportation sector.

    1. Energy overview, Energy consumption by sector, and Environment now include preliminary 2020 statistics for U.S. total energy consumption, production, trade, and carbon dioxide emissions.
    2. Non-combustion use of fossil fuels in physical units (Table 1.11a), and Heat content of non-combustion use of fossil fuels (Table 1.11b) have been revised for 2018–2020. Revisions affect data in Energy overview and Environment.
    3. Updated preliminary 2020 petroleum and natural gas heat contents for Approximate Heat Content tables (A2, A3, and A4) have been incorporated. Revisions affect data presented in Energy overview, Energy consumption by sector, Petroleum, Renewable energy, and Environment. The revised 2020 heat contents are used as estimated 2021 heat contents.
    4. Noncombustible renewable primary energy consumption tables E1a and E1b include preliminary 2020 statistics for noncombustible renewable (wind, hydroelectric power, solar, and geothermal) energy consumption using the captured energy and fossil fuel equivalency approaches.

    1. EIA has revised its population statistics in Population, U.S. gross domestic product, and U.S. gross output (Table C1) for 1950–2020. Revisions affect data in Energy overview.

  • June 2020 release
    1. Primary energy production by source (Table 1.2) has revised production totals for natural gas plant liquids from 1949 to 1980 as a result of changes in estimation methodology. The revisions affect historical data in Tables 1.1 and 1.2, and they affect production factors for natural gas plant liquids in Table A2.
    2. Total energy expenditures data for 2010–2018 have been revised in coordination with EIA's State Energy Data System 2018. Revisions affect data in Primary energy consumption, energy expenditures, and carbon dioxide emissions indicators (Table 1.7).
    3. Estimated primary energy consumption in the United States, selected years, 1635–1945 (Table D1) is now available as an Excel spreadsheet.
  • March 2020 release
    1. Primary energy exports by source (Table 1.4b) was modified to move the column for total net imports to new Table 1.4c.
    2. New Table Table 1.4c, Primary energy net imports by source, presents data on the net imports of coal, coal coke, natural gas, crude oil, petroleum products, total petroleum, biomass, electricity, and total energy.
    3. Petroleum consumption by sector (Tables 3.7a, 3.7b, and 3.7c) and Heat content of petroleum consumption by sector (Tables 3.8a, 3.8b, and 3.8c) have revised sector allocations for distillate and residual fuel oil for 2018–2019. The revisions affect data in Energy consumption by sector and Environment.
    4. Updated 2019 petroleum and natural gas heat contents for Approximate Heat Content tables (A2, A3, and A4) have been incorporated. Revisions affect data presented in British thermal units in Energy overview, Energy consumption by sector, Petroleum, Renewable energy, and Environment. The revised 2019 heat contents are used as estimated 2020 heat contents.
    5. Noncombustible renewable primary energy consumption tables E1a and E1b include preliminary 2019 statistics for noncombustible renewable energy consumption using the captured energy and fossil fuel equivalency approaches.

Changes in 2019

  • September 2019 release
    1. Petroleum consumption by sector (Tables 3.7a, 3.7b, and 3.7c), Heat content of petroleum consumption by sector (Tables 3.8a, 3.8b, and 3.8c), Non-combustion use of fossil fuels in physical units (Table 1.11a), and Heat content of non-combustion use of fossil fuels (Table 1.11b) have revised propane data beginning in 1973 because of changes in estimation methodology. The revisions affect data in Energy consumption by sector and Environment.
  • July 2019 release
    1. Non-combustion use of fossil fuels in physical units (Table 1.11a) and Heat content of non-combustion use of fossil fuels (Table 1.11b) have been revised for 1973–2018. Revisions affect data in Energy overview and Environment.
    2. Renewable energy production and consumption by source (Table 10.1) was modified to include a new column for wood energy production.
    3. International petroleum (formerly Section 11) has been removed from the MER. Data from the removed tables can now be found in EIA's International Energy Statistics data browser:
      • World crude oil production (formerly Tables 11.1a and 11.1b): annual, monthly
      • Petroleum consumption in OECD countries (formerly Table 11.2): annual, monthly
      • Petroleum stocks in OECD countries (formerly Table 11.3): annual, monthly
    4. Environment (formerly Section 12) is now Section 11.

    1. Total energy expenditures data for 1973–2017 have been revised in coordination with EIA's State Energy Data System 2017. Revisions affect data in Primary energy consumption, energy expenditures, and carbon dioxide emissions indicators (Table 1.7).

    1. Petroleum consumption by sector (Tables 3.7a, 3.7b, and 3.7c) and Heat content of petroleum consumption by sector (Tables 3.8a, 3.8b, and 3.8c) have revised sector allocations for propane and total hydrocarbon gas liquids in 2010–2019. The revisions affect data in Energy consumption by sector, Environment, and Approximate heat content of petroleum consumption and fuel ethanol (Table A3).
    2. Renewable energy consumption: industrial and transportation sectors (Table 10.2b) was modified to include a new column for other biomass consumption in the transportation sector.
  • February 2019 release
    1. New Table 8.2, Uranium overview (formerly AER Table 9.3), presents data on uranium production, trade, purchases, inventories, prices, and loaded uranium.
    2. Petroleum consumption by sector (Tables 3.7a, 3.7b, and 3.7c) and Heat content of petroleum consumption by sector (Tables 3.8a, 3.8b, and 3.8c) have revised sector allocations for distillate and residual fuel oil in 2017�2018. The revisions affect data in Energy consumption by sector and Environment.
  • January 2019 release
    1. U.S. government energy consumption by agency, fiscal years (Table 2.7) was modified to include a new column for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
    2. Other renewable fuels consumption data in Biodiesel and other renewable fuels overview (Table 10.4) were revised, beginning in 2009, as a result of a change in the estimation methodology. See Table 10.4 Sources for Other Renewable Fuels for details. Revisions affect data in Energy overview, Energy consumption by sector, Petroleum, Renewable energy, Environment, and Table A3.
    3. Population, U.S. gross domestic product, and U.S. gross output (Table C1) was modified to display gross domestic product data rebased from chained 2009 dollars to chained 2012 dollars. Table C1 now includes historical gross output data for 1949–1986 and revised gross output data for 1987–2017. Revisions affect data in the Energy overview.

Changes in 2018

  • October 2018 release
    1. Table 3.3b Petroleum Trade: Imports by Type was previously titled Imports and Exports by Type. The table has been modified to remove columns for exports of crude oil, petroleum products, and total petroleum.
    2. New Tables 3.3e and 3.3f present data on U.S. petroleum exports by type of product and country of destination. Table 3.3e includes crude oil and total petroleum columns that used to appear in Table 3.3b.
    3. Tables 3.2, 3.3b, 3.4, and 3.5 have been modified to include new, separate columns for Propane and Propylene.
    4. Natural gas statistics have been revised in coordination with EIA's Natural Gas Annual 2017. Revisions affect data series in Energy overview, Energy consumption by sector, Natural gas, Energy prices, and Environment.
    5. Updated heat contents for motor gasoline and total petroleum consumption (Table A3) from 1993 through 2017 have been incorporated. Revisions affect Btu data in Energy overview, Energy consumption by sector, Petroleum, and Environment. The revised 2017 heat contents are used as estimated 2018 heat contents.
  • May 2018 release
    1. Petroleum consumption tables 3.7a, 3.7b, and 3.7c, and heat content of petroleum consumption tables 3.8a, 3.8b, and 3.8c have been modified to reflect revised sector allocation estimates for propane and total hydrocarbon gas liquids for 2010–2018.
    2. Approximate heat content of petroleum consumption and fuel ethanol (Table A3) includes the revised petroleum consumption factors for 2010–2018.
  • March 2018 release

  • Year-end summary 2017
    1. New Tables 1.11a and 1.11b, "Non-combustion use of fossil fuels in physical units" and "Heat content of non-combustion use of fossil fuels" (formerly AER Table 1.15), have been added. The tables display estimated consumption, in physical units and British thermal units, of fossil fuels (petroleum, natural gas, and coal) not combusted for energy use (November).
    2. The following tables have been reconfigured to align with EIA�s definition of hydrocarbon gas liquids (HGL): 3.2, 3.3b, 3.4, 3.5, 3.6, 3.7a, 3.7b, 3.7c, 3.8a, 3.8b, 3.8c, 12.1, 12.2, 12.3, 12.4, 12.5, and A3 (September).
    3. The colors of the trend lines and bars shown in the figures have been revised. To improve consistency, colors have been assigned by energy source, sector, and year throughout the MER (February).
  • November 2017 release
    • New Tables 1.11a and 1.11b, “Non-Combustion Use of Fossil Fuels in Physical Units” and “Heat Content of Non-Combustion Use of Fossil Fuels,” (formerly AER Table 1.15) have been added. The tables display estimated consumption, in physical units and British thermal units, of fossil fuels (petroleum, natural gas, and coal) not combusted for energy use.

Revisions affect Btu data in Energy overview, Energy consumption by sector, Petroleum, Renewable energy, and Environment.
    2. Energy overview, Energy consumption by sector, and Environment now include preliminary 2016 statistics for U.S. total energy consumption, production, trade, and carbon dioxide emissions.
  • February 2017 release
    • he colors of the trend lines and bars shown in the figures have been revised. To improve consistency, colors have been assigned by energy source, sector, and year throughout the MER.
  • January 2017 release
    1. Tables 3.7a, 3.7b, 3.7c, 3.8a, 3.8b, and 3.8c on petroleum consumption, in physical units and Btu, have been modified to reflect revised sector allocation estimates for motor gasoline.
    2. Tables 10.2a and 10.2b on renewable energy consumption have been modified to reflect revised sector allocation estimates for fuel ethanol.

  • Year-end summary 2016
    1. New Tables E1a and E1b, "Noncombustible Renewable Primary Energy Consumption: Conventional Hydroelectric Power, Geothermal, and Wind" and "Noncombustible Renewable Primary Energy Consumption: Solar and Total," (formerly AER Table F3) have been added. Tables present renewable consumption data in British thermal units using an alternative approach to calculating the heat content of electricity generated from noncombustible renewables (December).
    2. New Table 10.5, "Solar Energy Consumption," presents new and revised historical estimates of solar energy consumption in British thermal units. The data in the six "Distributed Solar Energy" columns in Table 10.5 replace the distributed solar energy data that used to appear in the "Solar/PV" columns on Table 10.2, "Renewable Energy Consumption." See the July 2016 MER for reference (August).
    3. New Table 10.6, "Solar Electricity Net Generation," presents newly available historical estimates of distributed (small-scale) solar energy generation and data on utility-scale solar electricity net generation in kilowatthours (August).
  • December 2016 Release

    1. New Table 10.5, “Solar Energy Consumption,” presents new and revised historical estimates of solar energy consumption in British thermal units. The data in the six “Distributed Solar Energy” columns in Table 10.5 replace the distributed solar energy data that used to appear in the “Solar/PV” columns on Table 10.2, “Renewable Energy Consumption.” See the July 2016 MER for reference.

    2. Electricity statistics have been revised in coordination with EIA's Electric Power Annual 2014. Revisions affect data series in Energy Overview, Energy Consumption, Petroleum, Natural Gas, Coal, Electricity, Nuclear Energy, Energy Prices, Renewable Energy, and Environment.
    3. Approximate Heat Content of Petroleum Consumption and Fuel Ethanol (Table A3) has a revised fuel ethanol feedstock factor for 2015. The revision affects data in Energy Overview, Energy Consumption by Sector, Renewable Energy, and Environment.

    • Monthly Energy Time Series (METS): With the August 2000 release of the Monthly Energy Review (MER), the U.S. Energy Information Administration announces a new facility to access long-term monthly time series that parallel the data series routinely released in the MER. Wherever possible, monthly time series from January 1973 forward are now available electronically through METS.
    • To reach the new time series, tap on any energy topic on the MER home page. METS connections are indicated for any MER data table that has long-term historical monthly data available.
    • METS replaces an EIA product called the Historical Monthly Energy Review (HMER), which was released in paper copy in September 1991 and updated and released again in August 1994.
    1. Overview of U.S. Petroleum Trade (Table 1.8) is expanded to include imports from OPEC, imports from OPEC as a share of products supplied, and imports from OPEC as a share of total imports.
    2. Coal Stocks (Table 6.3) is expanded to include estimated stocks held by "Other Power Producers" from January 1998 forward. The table is redesigned to present coverage of the entire electric power sector rather than of electric utilities only.

    • Energy Consumption per Dollar of Gross Domestic Product is recalculated for the entire series 1973 forward to incorporate the revised gross domestic product series that was recently released by the U.S. Department of Commerce, Bureau of Economic Analysis.

    1. In the "Energy Summary" section, "Motor Vehicle Mileage, Fuel Consumption, and Fuel Rates" (Table 1.10) expands and replaces "Passenger Car Efficiency." In addition to passenger car mileage, fuel consumption, and fuel rates on the old table, the expanded version provides similar statistics for two additional categories of vehicles---"Vans, Pickup Trucks, and Sport Utility Vehicles" and "Trucks"---and for all vehicles together under "All Motor Vehicles."
    2. Nuclear Energy statistics are expanded from 1989 forward to cover all nuclear units in the entire electric power sector, including those that are nonutility facilities. The additional quantities of electricity net generation are also incorporated into consumption statistics in Overview Tables 1.1 through 1.4 and 1.9 and consumption data in Energy Consumption by Sector.
    3. New thermal heat rates for modern motor gasoline that incorporate oxygenated and reformulated gasolines are used to develop petroleum and total energy statistics in British thermal units (Btu). Annual national consumption-weighted averages of oxygenated, reformulated, and conventional motor gasoline heat rates are applied for all months beginning in 1994, the first year for which consistent data are available. That is, the motor gasoline factor for converting data from barrels to Btu is no longer a constant value but is now an annual variable based on the quantity of each type of motor gasoline consumed each year. Implementation of the new heat rates impacts all petroleum and total energy consumption, imports, and exports data in Btu from 1994 forward. See Table A3 for heat rates.
    4. Overview and Energy Consumption by Sector report the first set of statistics for the full year of 1999.

    1. In the "Coal," "Energy Consumption," and "Overview" sections, consumption data are revised to incorporate coal used by "Other Power Producers" into the U.S. energy accounts for 1992 forward. The changes are summarized as follows: Table 6.2 is redesigned to present "End-Use Sectors" and an "Electric Power Sector," which includes "Other Power Producers" for the first time. Table 6.1 coal consumption is recalculated from 1992 forward to reflect the additional coal consumed by the other power producers. All data in the Energy Consumption by Sector section were recalculated for 1992 forward to reflect the incorporation of the additional coal. All consumption-related data in the Overview section (Tables 1.1, 1.2, 1.4, and 1.9) also were recalculated for 1992 forward.
    2. The "Electricity" section includes an expansion of Table 7.5 to add nonutilty power producers data where available.
    3. The data presented on nuclear electricity gross generation by region and country are reorganized. The contents of Tables 10.4d and 10.4e are switched to bring Eastern Europe in place right after Western Europe. The summary table, Table 10.4a, is revised similarly.

    • The Electricity section is extensively redesigned. New tables and figures present an improved overview of the entire industry and give better coverage of the rapidly expanding nonutility power producers. Detailed data are now available for net generation of electricity by energy source for the industry as a whole and separately for utilities and nonutilities. In addition, the consumption of fossil fuels to generate electricity and stocks of coal and petroleum are now summarized for the entire industry and are also presented separately for utilities and nonutilities. By table number, the changes are summarized as follows:
