Preliminary estimates indicate that the transportation sector accounted for 72 percent of total U.S. estimated petroleum consumption, which includes fuel ethanol, biodiesel, and other renewable fuels blended into petroleum. The industrial sector accounted for 23 percent of total U.S. estimated petroleum consumption, the residential sector 3 percent, the commercial sector 2 percent, and the electric power sector 1 percent.
What are renewable portfolio standards (RPS) and how do they affect renewable electricity generation?
Jan 25, 2013
Renewable portfolio standards (RPS) are policies designed to increase electricity generation from renewable resources, including wind, solar, geothermal, and biomass. While there is no national-level renewable portfolio standard, many states have established their own.
What is an oil refinery?
Jan 25, 2013
A refinery is an industrial complex that manufactures petroleum products, such as gasoline, from crude oil and other feedstocks. Many different types of refineries exist across the country. What differentiates one refinery from another are their capacities and the types of processing units used to produce these petroleum products. This article describes some key refinery processes and provides links to more in-depth articles about the individual processes.

South Korea Country Analysis Brief
Jan 17, 2013
South Korea, which lacks domestic energy reserves, is one of the world’s top energy importers. The country was the second largest importer of liquefied natural gas, the third largest importer of coal, and the fifth largest importer of crude oil in 2011. Despite its lack of resources, South Korea has some of the most advanced oil refineries in the world, and its companies are seeking overseas oil and gas opportunities.
South Africa Country Analysis Brief
Jan 17, 2013
South Africa produces small amounts of crude oil and natural gas and must rely on its domestic coal production to fuel its electricity sector and crude oil imports to feed its refineries. Additionally, South Africa has one of the world’s largest synthetic fuels industries and uses proprietary technology to convert coal and gas to liquid.

Indonesia Country Analysis Brief
Jan 9, 2013
Indonesia is the fourth most populous country in the world. Formerly a net oil exporter and OPEC member, Indonesia struggles to attract sufficient investment to meet growing domestic energy consumption because of inadequate infrastructure and a complex regulatory environment. At the same time, it was the world’s largest exporter of coal by weight and the eighth largest exporter of natural gas in 2011. The government seeks to meet energy demand at home by reorienting domestic energy production away from exports and increasing renewable energy production, particularly geothermal power.
Short-Term Energy Outlook - Market Prices and Uncertainty Report
Jan 8, 2013
In a continuation of the low price-volatility trend from much of fourth quarter 2012, Brent crude oil prices were relatively unchanged over the last month and remained in a narrow trading range. From December 3, 2012, to January 3, 2013, the average front month price of Brent crude oil was $109.48, only $0.02 per barrel lower than its November average. Over the same period, the WTI front month contract averaged $88.68 per barrel, an increase of $1.89 per barrel from its November average.
Short-Term Energy Outlook
Jan 8, 2013
EIA expects that the Brent crude oil spot price, which averaged $112 per barrel in 2012, will fall to an average of $105 per barrel in 2013 and $99 per barrel in 2014. The projected discount of West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil to Brent, which averaged $18 per barrel in 2012, falls to an average of $16 per barrel in 2013 and $8 per barrel in 2014, as planned new pipeline capacity lowers the cost of moving Mid-continent crude oil to the Gulf Coast refining centers.
Natural Gas Monthly
Jan 7, 2013
The December Natural Gas Monthly, which features data through October 2012, has been released. This issue contains extensive revisions to 2010 and 2011 data as a result of benchmarking to data published in the Natural Gas Annual 2011. These revisions primarily apply to statistics on production, underground storage, consumption, and prices by sector. Many 2012 monthly data series have been revised as well because of updated estimation parameters using 2011 annual data. Revised breakouts of gross production from shale and coalbed methane by state are available back to 2007 as well. The October 2012 monthly data show dry production of 2,058 billion cubic feet (Bcf), the highest month on record matched by the highest October on record for natural gas consumption of 1,888 Bcf.
Monthly Natural Gas Gross Production Report
Jan 7, 2013
Monthly natural gas gross withdrawals estimated from data collected on Form EIA-914 (Monthly Natural Gas Production Report) for Federal Offshore Gulf of Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, Wyoming, Other States and Lower 48 States. Alaska data are from the State of Alaska and included to obtain a U.S. Total.
Natural Gas Annual
Jan 7, 2013
The 2011 Natural Gas Annual shows newly revised natural gas gross production data from shale and coalbed methane from 2007 to 2011. Using data from the states and other sources, the data show gross production from shale reaching 30 percent of total gross production in 2011 after comprising only 8 percent of gross production in 2007. Conversely, gross production from coalbed methane, while around 2 trillion cubic feet a year since 2007, has been declining slightly each year, percentage-wise, since peaking at 8 percent of gross production in 2007, down to 6 percent in 2011.
Angola Country Analysis Brief
Jan 3, 2013
In 2011, Angola produced over 1.8 million barrels of oil per day, ranking third in Africa behind Nigeria and Algeria. In addition, recent exploration success and the promise of a new liquefied natural gas (LNG) export terminal will help strengthen the country’s energy portfolio.
