Short-Term Energy Outlook - Market Prices and Uncertainty Report
Feb 10, 2015
Crude oil prices moved higher toward the end of January and into the first week of February. The North Sea Brent front month futures price settled at $56.57/bbl on February 5, an increase of $0.15/bbl from January 2. The front month West Texas Intermediate (WTI) contract price settled at $50.48/bbl on February 5, $2.21/bbl lower than at the start of January. These changes were relatively small compared to an average month-over-month decline of $9/bbl from July 2014 to January 2015.
Short-Term Energy Outlook
Feb 10, 2015
January was the seventh consecutive month in which monthly average North Sea Brent crude oil prices decreased, reaching $48/barrel (bbl), the lowest since March 2009. The price decline reflects continued growth in U.S. tight oil production and strong global supply, amid weaker global oil demand growth, which contributed to rising global oil inventories. In January, estimated Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) total commercial oil inventories reached their highest level since August 2010.
An Assessment of Interval Data and Their Potential Application to Residential Electricity End-Use Modeling
Feb 10, 2015
The Energy Information Administration (EIA) is investigating the potential benefits of incorporating interval electricity data into its residential energy end use models. This includes interval smart meter and submeter data from utility assets and systems. It is expected that these data will play a significant role in informing residential energy efficiency policies in the future. Therefore, a long-term strategy for improving the RECS end-use models will not be complete without an investigation of the current state of affairs of submeter data, including their potential for use in the context of residential building energy modeling.
Drilling Productivity Report
Feb 9, 2015
EIA’s monthly Drilling Productivity Report (DPR) has been released. The DPR takes a fresh look at oil and natural gas production, starting with an assessment of how and where drilling for hydrocarbons is taking place. It uses recent data on the total number of drilling rigs in operation along with estimates of drilling productivity and estimated changes in production from existing oil and natural gas wells to provide estimated changes in oil and natural gas production for seven key fields.
Drivers of U.S. Household Energy Consumption, 1980-2009
Feb 3, 2015
In 2012, the residential sector accounted for 21% of total primary energy consumption and about 20% of carbon dioxide emissions in the United States (computed from EIA 2013). Because of the impacts of residential sector energy use on the environment and the economy, this study was undertaken to help provide a better understanding of the factors affecting energy consumption in this sector. The analysis is based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) residential energy consumption surveys (RECS) 1980-2009.
NEMS Freight Transportation Module Improvement Study
Feb 3, 2015
The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) contracted with IHS Global, Inc. (IHS) to analyze the relationship between the value of industrial output, physical output, and freight movement in the United States for use in updating analytic assumptions and modeling structure within the National Energy Modeling System (NEMS) freight transportation module, including forecasting methodologies and processes to identify possible alternative approaches that would improve multi-modal freight flow and fuel consumption estimation.

Japan Country Analysis Brief
Jan 30, 2015
Japan is one of the largest global importers of hydrocarbons as a result of limited domestic energy resources and a high level of energy consumption. After the Fukushima nuclear incident in early 2011, the country has become even more dependent on fossil fuels for its electricity use.
Natural Gas Monthly
Jan 30, 2015
• November 2014 marked the first time since 1996 that the United States did not receive any liquefied natural gas import cargoes from our trading partners.
• Preliminary dry gas production for November 2014 is 2,186 billion cubic feet (Bcf) or 72.9 Bcf/day. For 2014, November is the highest dry production value in Bcf/day of the year. November's 72.9 Bcf/day is a 0.9 increase from October's revised 72.0 Bcf/day, and a 6.3% increase from last November's 68.6 Bcf/day.
• Preliminary total consumption for November 2014 is 2,375 Bcf or 79.2 Bcf/day, an increase of 2.6% from last November's 2,316 Bcf or 77.2 Bcf/day.
• Residential consumption drove the total consumption increase: deliveries to residential consumers for November 2014 are 541 Bcf or 18 Bcf/day (an increase from last November’s 17.3 Bcf/day); industrial deliveries are 660 Bcf or 22 Bcf/day (an increase from last November’s 21.7 Bcf/day); and electric power deliveries are 599 Bcf or 20 Bcf/day (a slight increase from last November’s 19.9 Bcf/day).

Iraq Country Analysis Brief
Jan 30, 2015
Iraq has the fifth largest proved crude oil reserves in the world, and it is the second-largest crude oil producer in OPEC. Iraq’s crude oil production grew by 950,000 barrels per day (bbl/d) over the past five years, increasing from almost 2.4 million bbl/d in 2010 to almost 3.4 million bbl/d in 2014. Despite the ISIL offensive that began in June 2014, Iraq’s production actually increased during the second half of 2014, owing to increased output at fields in southern Iraq and in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region.

Kazakhstan has the second-largest oil reserves as well as the second-largest oil production among the former Soviet republics after Russia. The country’s estimated total petroleum and other liquids production was 1.70 million barrels per day (bbl/d) in 2014. The key to its continued growth in liquids production from this level will be the development of its giant Tengiz, Karachaganak, and Kashagan fields. Development of additional export capacity will also be necessary for production growth.
Short-Term Energy Outlook - Market Prices and Uncertainty Report
Jan 13, 2015
Crude oil prices continued to move lower in November and recorded their fifth consecutive month of declines. The North Sea Brent front month futures price settled at $69.64/bbl on December 4, a decline of $15.14/bbl from November 3. The front month West Texas Intermediate (WTI) contract price settled at $66.81/bbl on December 4, decreasing by $11.97/bbl since the start of November.
Short-Term Energy Outlook
Jan 13, 2015
North Sea Brent crude oil spot prices fell by more than 15% in November, declining from $85/barrel (bbl) on November 3 to $72/bbl on November 28. Monthly average Brent crude oil prices have declined 29% from their 2014 high of $112/bbl in June to an average of $79/bbl in November, the lowest monthly average since September 2010. The November price decline reflects continued growth in U.S. tight oil production along with weakening outlooks for the global economy and oil demand growth. The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries' (OPEC) decision in late November to maintain its current crude oil production target, despite lower oil prices, put additional downward pressure on price expectations.
