figure data

October 2024

Note:  This issue of the Natural Gas Monthly contains a substantial number of revisions to 2022 and 2023 data, benchmarking to the data published in the Natural Gas Annual and Electric Power Annual 2022.

  • In October 2024, dry natural gas production decreased year over year for the seventh time in the past eight months. Preliminary dry natural gas production in October 2024 was 3,192 billion cubic feet (Bcf), or 103.0 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d). Production was 1.1% (1.1 Bcf/d) lower in October 2024 than in October 2023 (104.1 Bcf/d). Despite this decrease, dry gas production was the second highest for the month since 1973, the earliest year in this data set. Gross withdrawals increased from October 2023:
    • Gross withdrawals: 3,892 Bcf for the month, or 125.55 Bcf/d
      • A 0.1% increase compared with October 2023 (125.48 Bcf/d)
    • • The daily rate of gross withdrawals was the highest for the month since 1980, the earliest year in this data set
  • Estimated natural gas consumption in October 2024 was 2,436 Bcf, or 78.6 Bcf/d:
    • A 0.4% decrease compared with October 2023 (78.9 Bcf/d)
    • Despite this decrease, the daily rate of natural gas consumption was the second highest for the month since we began using the current methodology for consumption in 2001
  • The year-over-year average daily rate of dry natural gas consumption in October 2024 decreased in three of the four consuming sectors. Natural gas deliveries by consuming sector in October 2024 were:
    • Residential deliveries: 195 Bcf for the month, or 6.3 Bcf/d
      • A 14.5% decrease compared with October 2023 (7.4 Bcf/d)
    • Commercial deliveries: 212 Bcf for the month, or 6.8 Bcf/d
      • A 6.2% decrease compared with October 2023 (7.3 Bcf/d)
    • Industrial deliveries: 693 Bcf for the month, or 22.4 Bcf/d
      • A 2.4% decrease compared with October 2023 (22.9 Bcf/d)
    • • Despite this decrease, this was the second highest daily rate of industrial deliveries for the month since 2001, the earliest year in this data set
    • Electric power deliveries: 1,071 Bcf for the month, or 34.5 Bcf/d
    • • A 5.4% increase compared with October 2023 (32.8 Bcf/d)
      • Highest daily rate of electric power deliveries for the month since we began using the current methodology for them in 2001
  • Net natural gas imports (imports minus exports) were -395 Bcf, or -12.7 Bcf/d, in October 2024, making the United States a net natural gas exporter. The United States exported 2.6 times more natural gas than it imported in October 2024. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports in October 2024 were 2.1% lower than the daily rate of LNG exported in October 2023; despite this decrease, the daily rate of LNG exports was the second highest for the month since we began tracking LNG exports in 1997. In October 2024, the United States exported 12.1 Bcf/d of LNG to 32 countries. Natural gas imports increased while exports decreased year over year in October 2024:
    • Total imports: 254 Bcf for the month, or 8.2 Bcf/d
    • • An 8.2% increase compared with October 2023 (7.5 Bcf/d)
      • Highest daily rate of natural gas imports for the month since 2011
    • Total exports: 649 Bcf for the month, or 20.9 Bcf/d
    • • A 0.5% decrease compared with October 2023 (21.0 Bcf/d)
      • Despite this decrease, this was the second highest daily rate of natural gas exports for the month since we began tracking them in 1973
