World crude oil prices generally moved downward during the month of September, with Brent crude oil falling over $12 during the month and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) a slightly lower $9. Economic concerns and a continued debt crisis in Europe lowered price levels across multiple asset classes; physical oil prices, in turn, were affected by lower expectations about near and mid-term world oil demand growth.
Short-Term Energy and Winter Fuels Outlook

EIA projects average household heating expenditures for natural gas, propane, and heating oil will increase by 3 percent, 7 percent, and 8 percent, respectively, this winter (October 1 to March 31) compared with last winter, while electricity heating expenditures fall by less than 1 percent. Average expenditures for households that heat with oil are forecast to be higher than in any previous winter.

South Korea was the world's tenth largest energy consumer in 2008, and with its lack of domestic reserves, Korea is one of the top energy importers in the world. The country is the fifth largest importer of crude oil, the third largest importer of coal, and the second largest importer of liquefied natural gas (LNG). Despite its lack of domestic energy resources, South Korea is home to some of the largest and most advanced oil refineries in the world.

The September issue of the NGM, featuring data for July 2011, is now available. July gross production in the Lower 48 States of 2,341 billion cubic feet (Bcf) showed a slight increase of 0.1 percent or 0.10 Bcf/day from June 2011. Estimates of U.S. marketed natural gas production in July continued to be strong with 65.83 Bcf/day totaling 2,041 Bcf for the month.
