Annual Coal Distribution Report 2012

Provides detailed information on U.S. domestic coal distribution for 2012 excluding waste coal and imports by coal origin state, destination state, mode of transportation, and coal consuming sector. The report also provides a summary of foreign coal distribution by coal-exporting state. All data for 2012 are final, and this report supersedes the data published in all quarterly reports during 2012.

The twelfth in a series of reports required by section 1245 (d) (4) (A) of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2012, which requires that, not later than 60 days from enactment and every 60 days thereafter, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) “submit to Congress a report on the availability and price of petroleum and petroleum products produced in countries other than Iran in the 60-day period preceding the submission of the report.”

In 2012, U.S. demonstrated reserve base (DRB) of coal totaled 481.4 billion short tons, estimated recoverable reserves (ERR) totaled 257.6 billion short tons, and recoverable reserves at producing mines totaled 18.7 billion short tons.

The Reference case projetions include only the effects of policies that have been implemented in law or final regulations.

Provides information about U.S. coal production, number of mines, prices, productivity, employment, productive capacity, and recoverable reserves to a wide audience, including Congress, Federal and State agencies, the coal industry, and the general public. U.S. coal production, employment, and productivity are based on the U.S. Department of Labor’s Mine Safety and Health Administration’s Form 7000-2, “Quarterly Mine Employment and Coal Production Report.” Prices, recoverable reserves, and productive capacity are based on EIA’s annual survey, Form EIA-7A, “Coal Production and Preparation Report.” Coal production in 2011 increased slightly from 2010, driven by export demand, to roughly 1.1 billion short tons. All data for 2012 and prior years are final.

The 2012 Natural Gas Annual shows record natural gas production and consumption levels in the United States. In 2012, domestic dry production of 24.1 trillion cubic feet (Tcf), or 65.7 billion cubic feet per day, (Bcf/d) rose 5 percent over 2011 with Pennsylvania making the largest gains of any state. Dry production in Pennsylvania rose from 3.6 Bcf/d in 2011 to 6.1 Bcf/d in 2012. Record levels of consumer deliveries at 23.4 Tcf, or 64.0 Bcf/d, were spurred by unprecedented use of gas used to generate electricity --which rose from 20.7 Bcf/d in 2011 to 24.9 Bcf/d in 2012.

After falling by more than 40 cents per gallon from the beginning of September through mid-November, weekly U.S. average regular gasoline retail prices increased by 8 cents per gallon to reach $3.27 per gallon on December 2, 2013, due in part to unplanned refinery maintenance and higher crude oil prices. The annual average regular gasoline retail price, which was $3.63 per gallon in 2012, is expected to average $3.50 per gallon in 2013 and $3.43 per gallon in 2014.

International crude oil benchmarks moved higher in November, showing their first month-over-month increase since August, while U.S. crude oil prices moved higher during the first week of December. The North Sea Brent front month futures price settled at $110.98 per barrel on December 5, an increase of $5.07 per barrel since its close on November 1. The West Texas Intermediate (WTI) front month futures contract rose $2.77 per barrel compared to November 1, settling at $97.38 per barrel on December 5.

EIA’s third Drilling Productivity Report (DPR) has been released. The DPR takes a fresh look at oil and natural gas production, starting with an assessment of how and where drilling for hydrocarbons is taking place. It uses recent data on the total number of drilling rigs in operation along with estimates of drilling productivity and estimated changes in production from existing oil and natural gas wells to provide estimated changes in oil and natural gas production for six key fields.

In this edition of the Petroleum Marketing Monthly, preliminary September 2013 data show crude oil prices declined modestly from August levels. Prices for gasoline also decreased, while prices for No. 2 distillates registered small increases. Prime Supplier data show both gasoline and ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel consumption fell month-on-month in September, though rates for both products remained above year-ago levels.

Russia is a major producer and exporter of energy and its economy largely depends on energy exports. Oil and gas revenues accounted for 52% of federal budget revenues and over 70% of total exports in 2012. Russia was the world’s third-largest producer of oil (after Saudi Arabia and the United States) and it was the second-largest producer of natural gas in 2012 (second to the United States). Russia is the third largest generator of nuclear power in the world and fourth-largest in terms of installed capacity.
