South Africa Country Analysis Brief

Oct 26, 2017
South Africa produces small amounts of crude oil and natural gas and must rely on its domestic coal production to fuel its electricity sector and crude oil imports to feed its refineries. Additionally, South Africa has one of the world’s largest synthetic fuels industries and uses proprietary technology to convert coal and gas to liquid. South Africa has struggled with power shortages in recent years, which spurred development in electricity capacity fueled by coal and renewable energy over the past two years.

Plug-in electric vehicles: future market conditions and adoption rates

Oct 23, 2017
This report, the first of four Issues in Focus articles from the International Energy Outlook 2017, analyzes the effects of uncertainties in the adoption of plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) on worldwide transportation energy consumption. Uncertainties surrounding consumer acceptance, vehicle cost, policies, and other market conditions could affect future adoption rates of plug-in electric vehicles. Two side cases are presented in this report that assume different levels of PEV adoption and result in different levels of worldwide transportation energy consumption.

State Energy Data System: Jet Fuel Through 2016

Oct 20, 2017
Annual state-level estimates of energy consumption, prices, and expenditures for jet fuel.

Saudi Arabia Country Analysis Brief

Oct 20, 2017
In 2016, Saudi Arabia was the largest exporter of total petroleum liquids (crude oil and petroleum products), with exports mostly destined to Asian and European markets. Saudi Arabia has 16% of the world's proved oil reserves, is the largest exporter of total petroleum liquids in the world, and maintains the world's largest crude oil production capacity at roughly 12 million barrels per day.

Energy Use and Energy Intensity of U.S. Manufacturing—Data from the 2014 Manufacturing Energy Consumption Survey (MECS)

Oct 18, 2017
Energy intensity in manufacturing in the United States decreased from 2010 to 2014. U.S. manufacturing overall fuel intensity decreased by 4.4% from 3.016 thousand British thermal units (Btu) per dollar of output in 2010 to 2.882 thousand Btu in 2014. U.S. manufacturing fuel consumption rose 4.7% from 2010 to 2014, although real gross output increased more rapidly at 9.6%.

Drilling Productivity Report

Oct 16, 2017
The Drilling Productivity Report (DPR) uses recent data on the total number of drilling rigs in operation along with estimates of drilling productivity and estimated changes in production from existing oil and natural gas wells to provide estimated changes in oil and natural gas production for seven key regions.

Short-Term Energy Outlook

Oct 11, 2017
EIA forecasts that average household expenditures for all major home heating fuels will rise this winter because of expected colder weather and higher energy costs. Average increases vary by fuel, with natural gas expenditures forecast to rise by 12%, home heating oil by 17%, electricity by 8%, and propane by 18%. Most of the increase reflects expected colder weather rather than higher energy costs. A warmer-than-forecast winter would see lower increases in expenditures, and a colder-than-forecast winter would see higher increases in expenditures (Winter Fuels Outlook).

U.S. Energy-Related Carbon Dioxide Emissions, 2016

Oct 5, 2017
The U.S. Energy Information Administration released analysis of 2016 energy-related carbon dioxide emissions today. The report indicates U.S. carbon dioxide emissions from the consumption of fossil fuels were 5,170 million metric tons carbon of dioxide in 2016, a decrease of 1.7% from the 2015 level. Energy-related carbon dioxide emissions have declined in 6 of the past 10 years. This analysis is based on data in the August 2017 Monthly Energy Review.

Ecuador Country Analysis Brief

Oct 5, 2017
Ecuador’s energy mix is dominated by oil, although its challenging investment environment and lack of domestic refining capacity limit oil revenues. Ecuador’s hydrocarbon resources are exclusively owned by the state, and state-owned oil companies account for most of the production.

Quarterly Coal Report, April - June 2017

Oct 2, 2017
U.S. coal production during second quarter 2017 totaled 187.1 million short tons. This was 5.1% lower than the previous quarter and 16.6% higher than second quarter 2016. Second quarter 2017 U.S. coal exports (21.8 million short tons) decreased 2.3% from first quarter 2017 and increased 53.2% from second quarter 2016. U.S. coal imports in second quarter 2017 totaled 2.2 million short tons. All data for 2015 and prior years are final. All data for 2016 and 2017 are preliminary.
