U.S. Movements of Crude Oil By Rail

Monthly data on rail movements of crude oil have been updated for December 2018. Crude oil movements by rail have significantly increased over the past five years. The data on crude-by-rail (CBR) movements are also fully integrated with EIA’s existing monthly petroleum supply statistics, which already include crude oil movements by pipeline, tanker, and barge.

In December 2018, for the 20th consecutive month, dry natural gas production increased year to year for the month. The preliminary level for dry natural gas production in December 2018 was 2,746 billion cubic feet (Bcf), or 88.6 Bcf/d. This level was 9.1 Bcf/d (11.5%) higher than the December 2017 level of 79.5 Bcf/d. The average daily rate of dry natural gas production for December was the highest for any month since EIA began tracking monthly dry natural gas production in 1973.

Total state CO2 emissions include those from direct fuel use across all sectors, including residential, commercial, industrial, and transportation, as well as primary fuels consumed for electricity generation.

Data in the February 2019 Electric Power Monthly (EPM) are for December 2018, during which net generation in the United States fell 4.6% from the December 2017 level. Consumption of natural gas for power generation was down 5.2% compared to December 2017. The average residential retail price of electricity for December 2018 was up 0.2% from what it had been in December 2017.

Natural Gas Processing Capacity in the Lower 48 States

State-level estimates of natural gas processing plant capacity, throughput, utilization, and heat content are now available for 2017. Estimates show processing plant capacity and throughput each increasing by about 5% on a net basis for the Lower 48 states between 2014 and 2017.
Net withdrawals in the Lower 48 states reach highest levels so far during this winter

Natural gas storage operators reported their largest withdrawals of the 2018–19 heating season, totaling 237 billion cubic feet (Bcf) for the week ending February 1, 2019. This level was the 12th-largest total net withdrawal of working natural gas in the Lower 48 states reported by EIA since 2010.
Short-Term Energy Outlook

Brent crude oil spot prices averaged $59 per barrel (b) in January, up $2/b from December 2018 but $10/b lower than the average in January of last year. EIA forecasts Brent spot prices will average $61/b in 2019 and $62/b in 2020, compared with an average of $71/b in 2018. EIA expects that West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil prices will average $8/b lower than Brent prices in the first quarter of 2019 before the discount gradually falls to $4/b in the fourth quarter of 2019 and through 2020.
