The December 2011 Natural Gas Monthly, which features data through
October 2011, has been released. This issue contains extensive
revisions to 2009 and 2010 data as a result of benchmarking to data
published in the Natural Gas Annual 2010. These revisions primarily
apply to statistics on production, underground storage, consumption, and
prices by sector. Many 2011 monthly data series have been revised as
well because of updated estimation parameters using 2010 annual data.
The October 2011 monthly data show gross production of 2,483 billion
cubic feet, the highest month on record.

Alaska data are from the State of Alaska and included to obtain a U.S. Total.

The Natural Gas Annual 2010 with comprehensive information on
State-level natural gas consumption, production, storage and State to
State flows has been released. The data show both increased production
as well as consumption in all consuming sectors for 2010 with deliveries
to the industrial and electric power sectors growing 6 and 7 percent from
2009, respectively. The Natural Gas Annual 2010 also contains extensive
revisions to data for 2009.

Changes in the December 2011 Electric Power Monthly (EPM)

Beginning with the December 2011 issue, the EPM will be published without a narrative executive summary. The executive summary tables will continue to be published.
The narrative EPM executive summary has been replaced by the data and description of trends in the Electricity Monthly Update. The EMU is available at: http://www.eia.gov/electricity/monthly/update/. The EMU's Highlights section features a monthly article about a major event or an informative topic pertaining to the electric power industry. The left column contains bulleted highlights at the top and key indicators in a table and graphics format that can be scanned at a glance. The right column is used for navigation.
Additionally, the December 2011 EPM contains finalized monthly 2010 data in accordance with EIA's recently released 2010 Electric Power Annual, and revises monthly 2011 data based on revised imputation coefficients derived from final 2010 data.

In recent years, a number of U.S. states have adopted or are considering smart grid related laws, regulations, and voluntary or mandatory requirements. At the same time, the number of smart grid pilot projects has been increasing rapidly. EIA commissioned SAIC to research the development of smart grid in the United States and abroad. The research produced several documents that will help guide EIA as it considers how best to track smart grid developments.

Natural gas production grew in 2010, with large gains in onshore production offsetting continuing declines in the Gulf of Mexico. Even as consumption grew year over year, particularly in the electric power and industrial sectors, strength in domestic production and abundant storage reduced the need for imports. Prices remained relatively low through the year.

EIA expects the U.S. average refiner acquisition cost (RAC) of crude oil to increase slightly over the next year, averaging about $101 per barrel in 2011 and $102 in 2012. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil has been trading at a discount to RAC for most of 2011, contrary to the traditional relationship. The forecast WTI price discount relative to the RAC narrows from an average $11 per barrel in the third quarter of 2011 to $3 per barrel by the fourth quarter of 2012, supported by the recently announced reversal of the Seaway pipeline in 2012.

Prices for West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil moved higher at the end of November with West Texas Intermediate (WTI) closing at $100.20 on November 30; near its highest price since June 9 and only the second time the benchmark has settled over $100 since then (Figure 1). Brent prices finished the month at $110.52 per barrel, towards the higher end of the $100 to $115 per barrel trading range the front month contract has been in since August.
