Crude oil prices were generally on the rise in September, while price trends for refiner sales of the principal finished petroleum products were mixed. Prime supplier survey data show sales of finished petroleum products fell in September and continued to remain below year-ago levels.

Provides information about U.S. coal production, number of mines, prices, productivity, employment, productive capacity, and recoverable reserves to a wide audience, including Congress, Federal and State agencies, the coal industry, and the general public. U.S. coal production, employment, and productivity are based on the U.S. Department of Labor's Mine Safety and Health Administration's Form 7000-2, "Quarterly Mine Employment and Coal Production Report." Prices, recoverable reserves, and productive capacity are based on EIA's annual survey form, EIA-7A, "Coal Production and Preparation Report." Final U.S. coal production for 2010 is reported to be 1,084.4 million short tons, about the same as the 2009 total of 1,074.9 million short tons. All data for 2010 and prior years are final.

U.S. Fuel Ethanol Plant Production Capacity

This is the first release of U.S. Energy Information Administration data on fuel ethanol production capacity. Future capacity data will be released annually near the end of September (data for January 1). This new report contains production capacity data for all operating U.S. fuel ethanol production plants as of January 1, 2011.

The November issue of the NGM, featuring data for September 2011, has been released. Driven by continued strong production and attractive prices abroad, year-to-date exports of natural gas reached 1,135 billion cubic feet (Bcf), putting 2011 on track to have the highest natural gas exports on record. Year-to-date dry production of 17,056 Bcf is nearly 7 percent above dry production for the same period in 2010.

Preliminary data indicate that the transportation sector accounted for 72 percent of total U.S. estimated petroleum consumption, which includes fuel ethanol, biodiesel, and other renewable fuels blended into petroleum. The industrial sector accounted for 23 percent of total U.S. estimated petroleum consumption, the residential sector 3 percent, the commercial sector 2 percent, and the electric power sector 1 percent.

data on co-firing fuels and carbon capture equipment from the Form EIA-3 survey
and the heat content of coal from the Form EIA-5 survey. Both forms will collect
data on coal origin by MSHA ID, mercury content, and commodity cost. Beginning
with 2nd Quarter 2011, data on co-firing fuels and carbon capture equipment will be included from the EIA-3 survey. Form EIA-5 data will include the heat content of
coal. All data for 2010 and prior years are final. All data for 2011 are preliminary.

The latest Electric Power Monthly (EPM) issue (November 2011) is now available on EIA's Electricity page. Data are for August 2011, during which net generation in the United States fell 0.6 percent from the August 2010 level. Consumption of coal for power generation fell 2.7 percent compared to August 2010. The average retail price of electricity for August 2011 was 10.59 cents per kilowatthour, 1.3 percent higher than August 2010, when the price was 10.45 cents per kWh.

EIA expects the U.S. average refiner acquisition cost of crude oil to remain relatively flat, averaging about $100 per barrel in 2011 and 2012. The value of West Texas Intermediate (WTI) benchmark crude oil was about $11 per barrel below the U.S. refiner acquisition cost of crude oil in the third quarter of this year.
