• Year-over-year total consumption of dry natural gas in May increased in all four consuming sectors. Deliveries of natural gas by consuming sector in May 2016 were as follows:
o Residential deliveries were 197 Bcf, or 6.4 Bcf/day, up 9.4% from 5.8 Bcf/day in May 2015.
o Commercial deliveries were 171 Bcf, or 5.5 Bcf/day, up 5.5% from 5.2 Bcf/day in May 2015.
o Industrial deliveries were 617 Bcf, or 19.9 Bcf/day, up 2.8% from 19.4 Bcf/day in May 2015. Industrial deliveries were the highest for the month since EIA began using the current sectoral definitions introduced in 2001.
o Electric power deliveries were 807 Bcf, or 26.0 Bcf/day, up 9.2% from 23.8 Bcf/day in May 2015. Electric power deliveries were the second-highest for the month since EIA began tracking them in 2001.

U.S. Movements of Crude Oil By Rail
Jul 29, 2016
Monthly data on rail movements of crude oil have been updated for May 2016. Crude oil movements by rail have significantly increased over the past five years. The new data on crude-by-rail (CBR) movements are also fully integrated with EIA’s existing monthly petroleum supply statistics, which already include crude oil movements by pipeline, tanker, and barge.
Monthly Energy Review
Jul 26, 2016
EIA's most comprehensive report on recent integrated energy statistics. Preliminary data indicate that, in April 2016, total energy consumption in the U.S. commercial sector equaled 1.3 quadrillion Btu, which was virtually unchanged from April 2015.
What Drives Petroleum Product Prices
Jul 25, 2016
This new section discusses the various factors that influence the prices of gasoline and distillate fuel oil, the two most-consumed petroleum products in the United States. Charts detailing prices, consumption, production, inventories, and trade for both petroleum products will be updated each month in the Short-Term Energy Outlook.

Drilling Productivity Report
Jul 18, 2016
EIA’s monthly Drilling Productivity Report (DPR) has been released. The DPR takes a fresh look at oil and natural gas production, starting with an assessment of how and where drilling for hydrocarbons is taking place. It uses recent data on the total number of drilling rigs in operation along with estimates of drilling productivity and estimated changes in production from existing oil and natural gas wells to provide estimated changes in oil and natural gas production for seven key fields.

Steel industry energy consumption: Sensitivity to technology choice, fuel prices, and carbon prices
Jul 7, 2016
Steel industry energy consumption in 2010 totaled 1,158 trillion British thermal units (Btu), representing 8% of total manufacturing energy consumption. Energy consumption in the steel industry is largely for crude steel production using basic oxygen furnace (BOF) and electric arc furnace (EAF) technologies. Overall energy intensity in EAF, used primarily to melt scrap steel, is significantly lower than in BOF which is used to create virgin steel from iron ore. Over the past two decades, a shift from BOF to EAF has contributed to a substantial reduction in the energy intensity of the U.S. steel industry. From 1991 to 2010, the EAF share of total U.S. steel production in physical units increased from 38% to 61%, and the overall energy intensity of crude steel production in Btu per metric ton decreased by 37%.
Hydrocarbon gas liquids production and related industrial development
Jul 6, 2016
Hydrocarbon gas liquids (HGL) are produced at refineries from crude oil and at natural gas processing plants from unprocessed natural gas. From 2010 to 2015, total HGL production increased by 42%. Natural gas processing plants accounted for all the increase, with recovered natural gas plant liquids (NGPL)—light hydrocarbon gases such as propane—rising by 58%, from 2.07 million barrels per day (b/d) in 2010 to 3.27 million b/d in 2015, while refinery output of HGL declined by 7%. The rapid increase in NGPL output was the result of rapid growth in natural gas production, as production shifted to tight gas and shale gas resources, and as producers targeted formations likely to yield natural gas with high liquids content. Annual Energy Outlook 2016 results suggest varying rates of future NGPL production growth, depending on relative crude oil and natural gas prices.
