May 10, 2016
Crude oil prices continued upward and reached the highest levels of the year. The North Sea Brent front-month futures price rose $6.34 per barrel (b) from April 1 to settle at $45.01/b on May 5 (Figure 1). The West Texas Intermediate (WTI) front-month futures price rose $7.53/b and settled at $44.32/b over the same period.

Short-Term Energy Outlook

May 10, 2016
North Sea Brent crude oil prices averaged $42/barrel (b) in April, a $3/b increase from March. Improving economic data, growing supply disruptions, and falling U.S. crude oil production and rig counts contributed to the price increase.

Nigeria Country Analysis Brief

May 6, 2016
Nigeria is the largest oil producer in Africa and is among the world’s top five largest exporters of liquefied natural gas (LNG). Supply disruptions, typically caused by pipeline sabotage from thieves siphoning crude oil and condensate, are common in Nigeria’s oil and natural gas industries. Pipeline sabotage and oil supply disruptions have increased in 2016, leading to a decline in Nigeria’s crude oil production. Because Nigeria heavily depends on oil revenue, its economy is noticeably affected by changes to its oil production and/or to global crude oil prices. The IMF projects that Nigeria’s oil and natural gas exports earned $52 billion in 2015, $35 billion less than in 2014, which is mostly attributed to the fall in oil prices that began in mid-2014.

This level was a 1.7 Bcf/day (2.3%) increase from February 2015 production of 73.6 Bcf/day. • Preliminary dry natural gas consumption for February 2016 was 2,703 Bcf, or 93.2 Bcf/day. This level was a decrease of 11.6% from 2,952 Bcf in February 2015, or 12.2 Bcf/day. • Year-over-year total consumption of dry natural gas in February decreased in three of the four consuming sectors, with the exception being electric power deliveries, which increased year to year. Deliveries of natural gas by consuming sector in February 2016 were as follows: o Residential deliveries were 707 Bcf, or 24.4 Bcf/day, down 24.5% from 32.3 Bcf/day in February 2015. o Commercial deliveries were 421 Bcf, or 14.5 Bcf/day, down 21.8% from 18.6 Bcf/day in February 2015. o Industrial deliveries were 668 Bcf, or 23.0 Bcf/day, down 2.6% from 23.6 Bcf/day in February 2015. o Electric power deliveries were 692 Bcf, or 23.9 Bcf/day, up 2.6% from 23.3 Bcf/day in February 2015.
