Quarterly Coal Report (QCR) — Fourth-Quarter 2019

U.S. coal production during the fourth quarter of 2019 totaled 165.2 million short tons (MMst), which was 8.9% lower than the previous quarter and 14.3% lower than the fourth quarter of 2018. In fourth-quarter 2019, U.S. coal exports (20.4 MMst) decreased 6.9% from the third-quarter 2019 level and decreased 28.3% from the fourth-quarter 2018 level. U.S. coal imports in the fourth quarter of 2019 totaled 1.7 MMst. All data for 2018 and previous years are final. All data for 2019 are preliminary.

The Quarterly Coal Distribution Report (QCDR) provides detailed U.S. domestic coal distribution data (excluding waste coal and imports) for fourth-quarter 2019 by coal origin state, coal destination state, mode of transportation, and consuming sector. Quarterly coal distribution data for all quarters are preliminary and will be updated in the corresponding Annual Coal Distribution Report.

With this edition of the PMM, 2019 annual averages for data series published in Tables 2 through 17 are available.

In January 2020, for the 33rd consecutive month, dry natural gas production increased year to year for the month. The preliminary level for dry natural gas production in January 2020 was 2,930 billion cubic feet (Bcf), or 94.5 Bcf/d. This level was 5.9 Bcf/d (6.7%) higher than the January 2019 level of 88.6 Bcf/d. The average daily rate of dry production was the highest for the month since EIA began tracking monthly dry production in 1997.

Natural gas exports—a combination of natural gas delivered to Mexico by pipeline plus liquefied natural gas (LNG) feedstock receipts at liquefaction terminals in the Lower 48 states—have averaged more than 15 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) during the past week (March 24–30), the highest weekly average ever, according to IHS Markit data. Receiving natural gas from pipelines connected to LNG liquefaction plants or feedstock is generally the first step in exporting LNG.

Data in the March 2020 Electric Power Monthly (EPM) are for January 2020, during which net generation in the United States fell 5.2 percent from the January 2019 level. Consumption of natural gas for power generation was up 10.7 percent compared to January 2019. The average residential retail price of electricity for January 2020 was up 2.5 percent from what it had been in January 2019.

Short-Term Energy Outlook

EIA delayed the release of the March STEO update by one day to incorporate recent significant global oil market developments. On March 9, Brent crude oil front-month futures prices fell below $35/b, a 24% daily decline and the second largest daily price decline on record. Prices fell following the March 6 meeting between members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and its partner countries, which ended without an agreement on production levels amid market expectations for declining global oil demand growth in the coming months. In addition to the following highlights, EIA has provided a short summary of the March STEO forecast in the crude oil section of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Markets Review (PNGMR).
