Mar 11, 2014
International crude oil futures prices rose over the previous month but remained within the recent, and relatively narrow, trading range. The North Sea Brent front month futures price settled at $108.10 per barrel (bbl) on March 6, an increase of $2.06/bbl from February 3. Over the same period, the West Texas Intermediate (WTI) front month futures contract rose $5.13/bbl, settling at $101.56/bbl on March 6.
Short-Term Energy Outlook
Mar 11, 2014
Temperatures east of the Rocky Mountains have been significantly colder this winter (October-February) compared with the same period both last winter and the average for the past 10 years, straining distribution networks and putting upward pressure on consumption and prices of fuels used for space heating. U.S. average heating degree days were 13% higher than last winter (indicating colder weather) and 10% above the October through February 10-year average. The Northeast was 13% colder than last winter, the Midwest and South both 19% colder, while the West was 5% warmer.
Drilling Productivity Report
Mar 10, 2014
EIA’s sixth Drilling Productivity Report (DPR) has been released. The DPR takes a fresh look at oil and natural gas production, starting with an assessment of how and where drilling for hydrocarbons is taking place. It uses recent data on the total number of drilling rigs in operation along with estimates of drilling productivity and estimated changes in production from existing oil and natural gas wells to provide estimated changes in oil and natural gas production for six key fields.

Annual state-level estimates of coal consumption, prices, and expenditures.
Indonesia Country Analysis Brief
Mar 5, 2014
Formerly a net oil exporter and OPEC member, Indonesia struggles to attract sufficient investment to meet growing domestic energy consumption because of inadequate infrastructure and a complex regulatory environment. At the same time, it was the world’s largest exporter of coal by weight in 2012 and the fourth-largest exporter of liquefied natural gas in 2013. The government seeks to meet energy demand at home by reorienting domestic energy production away from serving primarily export markets and increasing renewable energy production, particularly geothermal power.
Petroleum Marketing Monthly
Mar 3, 2014
In this edition of the Petroleum Marketing Monthly, preliminary December 2013 data show crude oil prices on the rise again after several months of decline. Refiner prices for finished petroleum products mostly increased, while Prime Supplier data continue to show month-on-month declines in sales for many surveyed products.
Natural Gas Monthly
Feb 28, 2014
The February Natural Gas Monthly, with data through December 2013, has been released.
Preliminary total consumption for 2013 is a record at 26,034 billion cubic feet (Bcf). Deliveries to commercial consumers in 2013 were the largest ever reported at 3,289 Bcf, and deliveries to residential and industrial customers were at the highest levels realized since 2003. Deliveries to electric power consumers was the only sector that declined in volume from 2012 to 2013. December 2013 total consumption is a record for any month at 2,912 Bcf.
Preliminary dry gas production for 2013 is a record at 24,280 Bcf. Monthly dry gas production for December was a record for the month at 2,090 Bcf.
Underground Natural Gas Working Storage Capacity
Feb 28, 2014
The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) has released its 2014 Underground Natural Gas Working Storage Capacity update with data for November 2013. U.S. natural gas storage capacity grew 2% in 2013, led by strong gains in salt-based storage in the traditional Producing region as well as in nonsalt storage fields in the West. In contrast, there was almost no growth in storage capacity in the East.

Alaska data are from the state of Alaska and included to obtain a U.S. total.
South Africa Country Analysis Brief
Feb 28, 2014
South Africa's energy sector is critical to its economy, as the country relies heavily on its large-scale, energy-intensive coal mining industry. South Africa has limited proved reserves of oil and natural gas and uses its large coal deposits to meet most of its energy needs, particularly in the electricity sector. Most of the oil consumed in the country, used mainly in the transportation sector, is imported from Middle East and West African producers in the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), and it is locally refined. South Africa also has a sophisticated synthetic fuels industry, producing gasoline and diesel fuels from the Secunda coal-to-liquids (CTL) and Mossel Bay gas-to-liquids (GTL) plants.
