Temperatures east of the Rocky Mountains have been significantly colder this winter (October-January) compared with the same period both last winter and the previous 10-year average, putting upward pressure on consumption and prices of fuels used for space heating. U.S. average heating degree days were 12% higher than last winter (indicating colder weather) and 8% above the previous 10-year average. The Northeast was 11% colder than last winter, the Midwest 17% colder, and the South 20% colder, while the West was 3% warmer.
Drilling Productivity Report
Feb 10, 2014
EIA’s fifth Drilling Productivity Report (DPR) has been released. The DPR takes a fresh look at oil and natural gas production, starting with an assessment of how and where drilling for hydrocarbons is taking place. It uses recent data on the total number of drilling rigs in operation along with estimates of drilling productivity and estimated changes in production from existing oil and natural gas wells to provide estimated changes in oil and natural gas production for six key fields.
High prices show stresses in New England natural gas delivery system
Feb 7, 2014
Since 2012, limited supply from the Canaport and Everett liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals coupled with congestion on the Tennessee and Algonquin pipelines has led to winter natural gas price spikes in New England. The problem continued in the winter of 2013-14, as indicated by New England's forward basis for January 2014 reaching $17.41. Pipeline expansions could ease price spikes, but their cost-effectiveness, including their ultimate cost to consumers, remains a challenge. This article reviews possible alternatives.
Winter 2013-14 Propane Updates
Feb 6, 2014
With the onset of severely cold weather in recent weeks, propane supplies in the Midwest are extremely tight. Information related to the current propane situation is now available.
Angola Country Analysis Brief
Feb 5, 2014
Angola is the second-largest oil producer in Sub-Saharan Africa, behind Nigeria. Angola has been the second-largest supplier of crude oil to China since 2005, behind Saudi Arabia. The United States, the European Union, and India are also major destinations for Angolan oil. However, U.S. imports of Angolan crude oil continue to decline because of increased U.S. production of similar quality crude grades. In mid-2013, Angola began exporting liquefied natural gas (LNG), following the recent start-up of the LNG plant at Soyo.
China Country Analysis Brief
Feb 4, 2014
China’s robust economic growth and thirst for energy resources in the past decade has driven it to become the top global energy consumer. China has the largest oil and gas production in the Asia-Pacific region and the largest coal production in the world, but the country’s escalating energy demand is increasing its reliance on imports and need to secure more energy supplies.
Petroleum Marketing Monthly
Feb 3, 2014
In this issue of the Petroleum Marketing Monthly, preliminary November 2013 data show crude oil prices falling for the third month in a row. Refiner prices for gasoline and No. 2 distillate also continue to show decreases, while Prime Supplier data reflect a downturn in sales for many of the surveyed products.

Natural Gas Monthly
Jan 31, 2014
The January Natural Gas Monthly, with data through November 2013, has been released.
Monthly dry gas production for November was the highest on record for the month, at 2,047 billion cubic feet (Bcf), or 68.2 Bcf/day. This volume showed a small increase from the revised dry production for October of 2,082 Bcf, or 67.1 Bcf/day.
Total consumption of natural gas for November 2013 was a record for the month, at 2,301 Bcf, or 76.7 Bcf/day. The 19.1% increase from the prior month was the largest October to November increase on record.
The electric power volume delivered to consumers was also the highest ever reported for the month of November, at 598 Bcf.

Qatar Country Analysis Brief
Jan 30, 2014
Qatar is the largest exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the world, and the country's exports of LNG, crude oil, and petroleum products provide a significant portion of government revenues. Several recent developments in the country's natural gas sector could boost production in the short term, and while Qatar's crude oil production is the second lowest in the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), increasing production of non-crude liquids—most of which is a byproduct of natural gas production—is contributing to gradual growth in total liquids production.
