Petroleum Marketing Monthly

The June 2018 Petroleum Marketing Monthly (PMM), with data through March 2018, presents monthly and annual price and volume statistics covering crude oil and refined products sales in the United States. In this issue of the PMM, preliminary March 2018 data show crude oil prices decreased from February 2018 levels, while prices for the major finished petroleum products show mixed trends. U.S.–level Prime Supplier data show gasoline and distillate fuels sales rose month-on-month; additionally, many of the surveyed products also show year-on-year increases.

U.S. Movements of Crude Oil By Rail

Monthly data on rail movements of crude oil have been updated for March 2018. Crude oil movements by rail have significantly increased over the past five years. The data on crude-by-rail (CBR) movements are also fully integrated with EIA’s existing monthly petroleum supply statistics, which already include crude oil movements by pipeline, tanker, and barge.

It includes three tables detailing working and net available shell storage capacity by facility type, product, and PAD District as of March 31.

2015 RECS: Consumption and expenditures data now available, including estimates for more than 20 new end uses

Estimates of household energy consumption and expenditures from the 2015 RECS are now available. Featured in this release are estimates of consumption and costs for more than 20 energy end uses not available in previous rounds of RECS. EIA also revised the housing characteristics data from the 2015 RECS.

Natural Gas Monthly

In March 2018, for the tenth consecutive month, dry natural gas production increased year-to-year from the same month a year ago. The preliminary level for dry natural gas production in March 2018 was 2,467 billion cubic feet (Bcf), or 79.6 Bcf/day. This level was 8.0 Bcf/day (11.2%) higher than the March 2017 level of 71.6 Bcf/day. The average daily rate of dry natural gas production for March was the highest for any month since EIA began tracking monthly dry production in 1973.

Autonomous Vehicles: Uncertainties and Energy Implications

The potential effect autonomous vehicles may have on the future of personal mobility and freight movement has received considerable attention in recent years. This attention has focused not only on discussion of real and perceived costs of travel, shared-use mobility, travel patterns, vehicle design, and vehicle ownership, but also on how autonomous vehicles may affect energy markets. This article uses modeling results from scenarios related to the Annual Energy Outlook 2018 to help quantify the potential effects on energy of widespread adoption of autonomous vehicles.

Electric Power Monthly

Data in the May 2018 Electric Power Monthly (EPM) are for March 2018 when net generation in the United States was 0.1% lower than the March 2017 level. Consumption of natural gas for power generation was up 8.9% compared with the level in March 2017. The average residential retail price of electricity for March 2018 was 0.8% higher than it was in March 2017. Data for Puerto Rico—electricity sales, revenue, customers, and average electricity prices—are now available in Chapter 8.

Analysis of Projected Crude Oil Production in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge

In December 2017, the passage of Public Law 115-97 required the Secretary of the Interior to establish and administer a competitive oil and natural gas program for the leasing, development, production, and transportation of oil and natural gas in and from the Coastal Plain (Section 1002 Area) of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR). Previously, ANWR was effectively under a drilling moratorium. Because this law was passed after the modeling for the Annual Energy Outlook 2018 (AEO2018) was completed, this article investigates the impact of this law change on the Reference case projections in the AEO2018.

Alternative Policies in Power Generation and Energy Demand Markets

EIA analyzes sensitivities around policies affecting the U.S. energy system using alternative scenarios to the Annual Energy Outlook 2018 (AEO2018) Reference case in the areas of renewable electric generation and end-use efficiency. This article presents results from two sets of alternative policy scenarios. The first set of cases looks at renewable tax credits and examines the impacts of tariffs on imported solar photovoltaic (PV) cells and modules. The second set of cases examines changes to end-use efficiency policies, including joint Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) and Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions standards for light-duty vehicles (LDVs) and efficiency standards for residential and commercial equipment.

Electricity use is becoming more common for residential heating ›

An increasing share of U.S. households are using electricity for heating, although natural gas remains the most common heating fuel. In 2024, 42% of U.S. households reported that electricity was their main space heating fuel, according to annual estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey. Natural gas was the main heating fuel in 47% of homes last year, a decline from 49% in 2010. More
