The Monthly Energy Review is EIA's comprehensive report on recent and historical energy statistics. Preliminary data indicate that U.S. total primary energy consumption equaled 50 quadrillion British thermal units (Btu) in the first six months of 2019, a 1% decrease from the same period in 2018. U.S. total primary energy production equaled 50 quadrillion Btu in the first six months of 2019, an 8% increase from the same period in 2018.

Data in the September 2019 Electric Power Monthly (EPM) are for July 2019. Compared with July 2018, July 2019 net generation in the United States fell 0.4%, consumption of natural gas for power generation increased 2.7%, and the average residential retail price of electricity increased 1.1%.

International Energy Outlook 2019

In its International Energy Outlook 2019 (IEO2019), the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) projects that world energy consumption will grow by nearly 50% between 2018 and 2050. EIA projects most of this growth will come from regions where the consumption of energy is driven by strong economic growth, particularly in non-OECD Asia. EIA’s annual long-term assessment of world energy markets includes a Reference case and four core side cases, which use different assumptions for the projections in each case.

Southern California Gas Company adopts new withdrawal protocols at the Aliso Canyon Natural Gas Storage facility

On July 23, 2019, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) approved new rules for how Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas) may withdraw natural gas at the Aliso Canyon Natural Gas Storage facility (Aliso Canyon). Previously, SoCalGas was only authorized to withdraw natural gas in an emergency, but the new rules are more flexible for addressing changes in natural gas supply and demand.

Working gas inventories see significant improvements this summer

Working natural gas stocks in the Pacific region totaled 275 billion cubic feet (Bcf) as of September 6, 2019, according to the latest EIA Weekly Natural Gas Storage Report (WNGSR). Pacific region working natural gas inventories are now just 28 Bcf lower than the five-year average and 26 Bcf higher than the year-ago level. The deficit to the five-year average reached a recent low of 19 Bcf, during the week ending August 23— the smallest in the region since May 5, 2017. Storage injections have slowed in recent weeks as pipeline maintenance work has constrained capacity at key receipt points.

Short-Term Energy Outlook

Brent crude oil spot prices averaged $59 per barrel (b) in August, down $5/b from July and $13/b lower than the average from August of last year. EIA forecasts Brent spot prices will average $60/b in the fourth quarter of 2019 and $62/b in 2020. EIA forecasts that West Texas Intermediate (WTI) prices will average $5.50/b less than Brent prices in 2020.

Natural Gas Monthly

In June 2019, for the 26th consecutive month, dry natural gas production increased year to year for the month. The preliminary level for dry natural gas production in June 2019 was 2,735 billion cubic feet (Bcf), or 91.2 Bcf/d. This level was 9.4 Bcf/d (11.5%) higher than the June 2018 level of 81.8 Bcf/d. The average daily rate of dry production was the highest for any month since EIA began tracking monthly dry production in 1997.
