Mercaptans: Also known as thiols. Mercaptans are highly odorous sulfur-containing hydrocarbons that are often removed from light petroleum products such as LPG or jet fuel. Mercaptans have a chemical structure that includes a hydrogen atom bonded to a sulfur atom bonded to a carbon atom, with the generic formula R-SH. Mercaptans can be removed in hydrotreaters and by sweetening in Merox units.
