Starting November 13, 2023, we will publish reformulated gasoline (RFG) price estimates for the Denver, Colorado area within the Rocky Mountain region (PADD 4). The Denver area previously only sold conventional gasoline like the rest of Colorado and PADD 4. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reclassified the geographic areas Denver-Boulder-Greeley-Ft. Collins-Loveland (Denver) in Colorado and Dallas-Fort Worth in Texas as Severe under the 2008 ozone National Ambient Air Quality Standards. This reclassification prohibits the sale of conventional gasoline in those areas. Due to this EPA action, several sampled stations on EIA’s weekly Motor Gasoline Price Survey (EIA-878) are affected and will contribute to the price estimates for RFG instead of conventional gasoline in their respective city (if applicable), state, PADD, and national levels beginning on November 13, 2023.
EIA will continue to publish price estimates for areas selling conventional gasoline in PADD 4 and Colorado. EIA's city definition for Denver does not completely align with EPA’s Denver RFG area. We also have sampled stations selling conventional gasoline in our Denver city definition. We will group these sampled stations with the Colorado conventional gasoline area.
Updated Petroleum Data Tables, EIA Application Programming Interface (API), Weekly Petroleum Status Report, and This Week in Petroleum to reflect changes in reformulated gasoline (RFG) price estimates.
