The U.S. Energy Information Administration is committed to its free and open data by making it available through an Application Programming Interface (API) and its open data tools. EIA's API is multi-facetted and contains the following time-series data sets organized by the main energy categories.
Electricity
- Balancing Authority Areas hourly operating data
- includes actual and forecast demand, net generation, and the power flowing between electric systems
- Generation
- Capability
- includes monthly generator-level capability by fuel type, sector, and state
- Retail sales
- includes monthly price, customers, revenue, and sales by sector and state
- State-level electricity data
- annually by state and fuel
Natural Gas
- Production
- includes monthly and annual withdrawals and production, gross withdrawals, offshore production, plant liquids, lease condensate, and methane production, and wellhead values and marketed production.
- Prices
- includes spot and futures prices and delivered prices to consumers.
- Consumption/end use
- monthly and annual natural gas consumed by product, process, and region, with heat content, deliveries, and number of consumers.
- Exploration and reserves
- includes annual proved reserves, natural gas wet, dry plant liquids, crude oil wells, deep sea wells, offshore, coalbed, shalegas, lease condensate, and proved non-producing.
- Imports/exports and pipelines
- includes monthly and annual exports, and re-exports by country, imports by state and point of entry, intra and interstate movements.
- Storage
- includes weekly working gas in underground storage, monthly and annual by additions and withdrawals, and storage capacity.
- Summary
- includes monthly and annual natural gas supply and disposition summary.
Petroleum
- Crude reserves and production
- includes monthly and annual crude oil and crude plus lease consdensate reserves and non-producing reserves, production, gulf of mexico and federal offshore, wells, drilling activity and exploration.
- Prices
- includes daily, weekly, monthly, and annual prices for retail gasoline and diesel fuel, spot and futures, heating oil, refiner gasoline, no.2 heating oil, propane, residual fuel, and refiner acquisition, f.o.b, and landed costs.
- Consumption and sales
- includes weekly product supplied, monthly and annual supplier sales volumes, motor gasoline, residual fuel oil and no. 4, kerosene, distillate fuel oil by end use.
- Refining and processing
- includes weekly refiner and blender net production, monthly and annual refiner and blender, etanol plant production, feeds, utilization and capacity.
- Imports/exports and movements
- includes weekly imports and exports and preleminary crude imports, monthly and annual crude oil imports by port of entry, processing area, exports by destination, country, api grade and by tanker, pipeline, and barge.
- Stocks
- includes weekly, monthly, and annual stocks by type propane/propylene, motor gasoline, distillate, and residual fuel oil for refinery, plant, and bulk terminals.
- Summary
- includes weekly, monthly, and annual summary data for oil supply and disposition, supply estimates, prices, and sales volumes.

- coal state aggregated data by mine type, includes production, productivity, labor hours, employees, and coal rank.
- Shipments
- mine- to plant-level data, reciepts and aggregate data including price, quantity, quality, and rank.

- coal consumption and quality data by state and sector, including price, reciepts, heat content, sulfur content, ash content, and stocks.

- coal import/export data, including price, quantity, country, rank, and customs district.

Note: The API Bulk Download Update runs twice daily at 5 a.m. and 3 p.m. eastern time. Updated Bulk API data should be available within 30-45 minutes after the update start time.
