Alaska data are from the State of Alaska and included to obtain a U.S. Total.

The March report includes the first complete set of 2011 preliminary statistics for U.S. total energy consumption, production, trade, and carbon dioxide emissions. Preliminary data indicate that U.S. total primary energy consumption equaled 98 quadrillion Btu in 2011, essentially the same as in 2010.
First Estimates from 2010 Manufacturing Energy Consumption Survey (MECS)

Consumption for all purposes in manufacturing establishments decreased by almost 10 percent from 2006, which follows the direction of compatible economic data. Further detailed results from the 2010 MECS survey will be released in the fall of this year.

Although Sudan and South Sudan are now separate countries, they are negotiating an oil transit fee, since about three-quarters of oil production originates from South Sudan, while the entire pipeline, refining, and export infrastructure is in Sudan. At the end of January, as a result of an impasse over a transit fee and other issues, South Sudan shut in all of its oil production.

Since 2003 changes in offshore production from the Federal Outer Continental Shelf have been the main driver of changes in crude oil production from Federal and Indian lands, according to data from the Office of Natural Resource Revenues at the U.S. Department of the Interior. Total crude oil sales from Federal and Indian lands increased from 642 million barrels in FY 2009 to 739 million barrels in FY 2010, but decreased to 646 million barrels in FY 2011. Natural gas production from Federal and Indian lands has declined every year since 2003, while coal production has remained fairly steady.

The increase in oil prices over the last month is a reflection of the current tight balance between global supply and demand. EIA estimates that spare production capacity averaged 2.6 million barrels per day in January and February, less than 3 percent of global consumption and a decrease of 1.1 million barrels per day from one year ago. Most of the oil production from Yemen, Syria and South Sudan continues to be shut-in and has contributed to the reduction in global spare production capacity.

EIA expects the price of West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil to average about $106 per barrel in 2012, $5 per barrel higher than in the previous Outlook and $11 per barrel higher than the average price last year. Supply disruptions in the Middle East and Africa contributed to a significant increase in world crude oil prices during February. EIA has increased the forecast 2012 average cost of crude oil to U.S.
