Nigeria Country Analysis Brief
Feb 27, 2015
Nigeria is the largest oil producer in Africa and is among the world’s top five exporters of liquefied natural gas (LNG). Despite the relatively large volumes of oil it produces, Nigeria’s oil production is hampered by instability and supply disruptions, while the natural gas sector is restricted by the lack of infrastructure to monetize natural gas that is currently flared (burned off). Nigeria in the past has been an important oil supplier to the United States, but U.S. imports of Nigerian crude oil have declined substantially and represented less than 1% of total U.S. crude oil imports in 2014.

Underground Natural Gas Working Storage Capacity
Feb 25, 2015
The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) has released its 2015 Underground Natural Gas Working Storage Capacity update with data for November 2014. Against a backdrop of low natural gas storage levels throughout 2014 and high levels of production, U.S. natural gas working storage capacity as of November 2014 was virtually unchanged from its November 2013 level. Continued gains in the capacity of salt caverns in the Producing region offset capacity declines in the East. Capacity in the West and Producing Nonsalt regions both increased slightly, but with minimal effect on the national total.

Short-Term Energy Outlook - Market Prices and Uncertainty Report
Feb 10, 2015
Crude oil prices moved higher toward the end of January and into the first week of February. The North Sea Brent front month futures price settled at $56.57/bbl on February 5, an increase of $0.15/bbl from January 2. The front month West Texas Intermediate (WTI) contract price settled at $50.48/bbl on February 5, $2.21/bbl lower than at the start of January. These changes were relatively small compared to an average month-over-month decline of $9/bbl from July 2014 to January 2015.
Short-Term Energy Outlook
Feb 10, 2015
January was the seventh consecutive month in which monthly average North Sea Brent crude oil prices decreased, reaching $48/barrel (bbl), the lowest since March 2009. The price decline reflects continued growth in U.S. tight oil production and strong global supply, amid weaker global oil demand growth, which contributed to rising global oil inventories. In January, estimated Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) total commercial oil inventories reached their highest level since August 2010.
An Assessment of Interval Data and Their Potential Application to Residential Electricity End-Use Modeling
Feb 10, 2015
The Energy Information Administration (EIA) is investigating the potential benefits of incorporating interval electricity data into its residential energy end use models. This includes interval smart meter and submeter data from utility assets and systems. It is expected that these data will play a significant role in informing residential energy efficiency policies in the future. Therefore, a long-term strategy for improving the RECS end-use models will not be complete without an investigation of the current state of affairs of submeter data, including their potential for use in the context of residential building energy modeling.
Drilling Productivity Report
Feb 9, 2015

The DPR takes a fresh look at oil and natural gas production, starting with an assessment of how and where drilling for hydrocarbons is taking place. It uses recent data on the total number of drilling rigs in operation along with estimates of drilling productivity and estimated changes in production from existing oil and natural gas wells to provide estimated changes in oil and natural gas production for seven key fields.
Drivers of U.S. Household Energy Consumption, 1980-2009
Feb 3, 2015
In 2012, the residential sector accounted for 21% of total primary energy consumption and about 20% of carbon dioxide emissions in the United States (computed from EIA 2013). Because of the impacts of residential sector energy use on the environment and the economy, this study was undertaken to help provide a better understanding of the factors affecting energy consumption in this sector. The analysis is based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) residential energy consumption surveys (RECS) 1980-2009.

Japan Country Analysis Brief
Jan 30, 2015
Japan is one of the largest global importers of hydrocarbons as a result of limited domestic energy resources and a high level of energy consumption. After the Fukushima nuclear incident in early 2011, the country has become even more dependent on fossil fuels for its electricity use.

Iraq Country Analysis Brief
Jan 30, 2015
Iraq has the fifth largest proved crude oil reserves in the world, and it is the second-largest crude oil producer in OPEC. Iraq’s crude oil production grew by 950,000 barrels per day (bbl/d) over the past five years, increasing from almost 2.4 million bbl/d in 2010 to almost 3.4 million bbl/d in 2014. Despite the ISIL offensive that began in June 2014, Iraq’s production actually increased during the second half of 2014, owing to increased output at fields in southern Iraq and in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region.
