Short-Term Energy Outlook

Jul 8, 2014
Developments in Iraq put upward pressure on world oil prices last month, helping North Sea Brent crude oil spot prices reach their highest daily level of the year at just over $115/barrel (bbl) on June 19. North Sea Brent crude oil spot prices increased from a monthly average of $110/bbl in May to $112/bbl in June. This was the 12th consecutive month in which the average Brent crude oil spot price ranged between $107/bbl and $112/bbl. EIA projects Brent crude oil prices to average $110/bbl in 2014 and $105/bbl in 2015, $2/bbl and $3/bbl higher than projected in last month's STEO, respectively.

India Country Analysis Brief

Jun 26, 2014
India was the fourth largest energy consumer in the world after China, the United States, and Russia in 2011. Although the country depends heavily on imported crude oil, mostly from the Middle East, Indian oil companies increasingly purchase stakes in overseas oil fields and have developed world-class refineries that export petroleum products around the world. Coal is India's primary source of energy, and coal supplies mostly go to the power sector. Because of insufficient fuel supply, the country suffers from a severe shortage of electricity generation, leading to rolling blackouts. India relies increasingly on imported natural gas and imported coal in electricity generation. Rural areas that lack access to the electric grid rely on traditional biomass for cooking, heating, and lighting.
