Drilling Productivity Report

Jul 18, 2016
EIA’s monthly Drilling Productivity Report (DPR) has been released. The DPR takes a fresh look at oil and natural gas production, starting with an assessment of how and where drilling for hydrocarbons is taking place. It uses recent data on the total number of drilling rigs in operation along with estimates of drilling productivity and estimated changes in production from existing oil and natural gas wells to provide estimated changes in oil and natural gas production for seven key fields.

Short-Term Energy Outlook - Market Prices and Uncertainty Report

Jul 12, 2016
Despite some price volatility in June and early July, crude oil prices remained in a narrow trading range near recent highs. The front-month Brent crude oil price decreased $3.32 per barrel (b) since June 1, settling at $46.40/b on July 7. The West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil price settled at $45.14/b, declining $3.87/b over the same time.

Short-Term Energy Outlook

Jul 12, 2016
U.S. regular gasoline retail prices this summer are forecast to average $2.25/gallon (gal), 2 cents/gal lower than forecast in last month's STEO and 39 cents/gal lower than last summer, measured as April through September. U.S. regular gasoline retail prices are forecast to average $2.12/gal in 2016 and $2.28/gal in 2017.

Steel industry energy consumption: Sensitivity to technology choice, fuel prices, and carbon prices

Jul 7, 2016
Steel industry energy consumption in 2010 totaled 1,158 trillion British thermal units (Btu), representing 8% of total manufacturing energy consumption. Energy consumption in the steel industry is largely for crude steel production using basic oxygen furnace (BOF) and electric arc furnace (EAF) technologies. Overall energy intensity in EAF, used primarily to melt scrap steel, is significantly lower than in BOF which is used to create virgin steel from iron ore. Over the past two decades, a shift from BOF to EAF has contributed to a substantial reduction in the energy intensity of the U.S. steel industry. From 1991 to 2010, the EAF share of total U.S. steel production in physical units increased from 38% to 61%, and the overall energy intensity of crude steel production in Btu per metric ton decreased by 37%.

Hydrocarbon gas liquids production and related industrial development

Jul 6, 2016
Hydrocarbon gas liquids (HGL) are produced at refineries from crude oil and at natural gas processing plants from unprocessed natural gas. From 2010 to 2015, total HGL production increased by 42%. Natural gas processing plants accounted for all the increase, with recovered natural gas plant liquids (NGPL)—light hydrocarbon gases such as propane—rising by 58%, from 2.07 million barrels per day (b/d) in 2010 to 3.27 million b/d in 2015, while refinery output of HGL declined by 7%. The rapid increase in NGPL output was the result of rapid growth in natural gas production, as production shifted to tight gas and shale gas resources, and as producers targeted formations likely to yield natural gas with high liquids content. Annual Energy Outlook 2016 results suggest varying rates of future NGPL production growth, depending on relative crude oil and natural gas prices.

Jun 30, 2016
• Dry natural gas production in April was lower than production in April 2015, the first year-to-year decrease for the month of April since 2006. Preliminary dry natural gas production for April 2016 was 2,212 billion cubic feet (Bcf), or 73.7 Bcf/day. This level was a 0.6 Bcf/day (0.8%) decrease from the April 2015 level of 74.3 Bcf/day. • Preliminary dry natural gas consumption for April 2016 was 2,111 Bcf, or 70.4 Bcf/day. This level was an increase of 3.9%, or 2.6 Bcf/day, from the 2,032 Bcf consumed in April 2015. • Year-over-year total consumption of dry natural gas in April increased in three of the four consuming sectors, with the exception being commercial deliveries, which decreased year-to-year. Deliveries of natural gas by consuming sector in April 2016 were as follows: o Residential deliveries were 330 Bcf, or 11.0 Bcf/day, up 1.9% from 10.8 Bcf/day in April 2015. o Commercial deliveries were 234 Bcf, or 7.80 Bcf/day, down 0.4% from 7.83 Bcf/day in April 2015. o Industrial deliveries were 622 Bcf, or 20.7 Bcf/day, up 2.3% from 20.3 Bcf/day in April 2015. o Electric power deliveries were 726 Bcf, or 24.2 Bcf/day, up 8.7% from 22.3 Bcf/day in April 2015.

In the Extended Policies case, existing tax credits that have scheduled reductions and sunset dates are assumed to remain unchanged through 2040. Other efficiency policies, including corporate average fuel economy standards, appliance standards, and building codes, are expanded beyond current provisions; and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Clean Power Plan regulations that reduce carbon dioxide emissions from electric power generation are tightened after 2030.

Azerbaijan Country Analysis Brief

Jun 24, 2016
Azerbaijan is one of the world’s oldest oil producers, and oil and natural gas production and exports are central to Azerbaijan's economy. Azerbaijan’s oil production has been relatively stable over the last few years, but oil revenues declined about 40% from 2014 to 2015 due to lower oil prices. Natural gas production and exports will increase significantly in the coming years as the Stage 2 development of the Shah Deniz natural gas and condensate field will more than double Azerbaijan’s natural gas exports by the end of the decade.

We expect rapid electricity demand growth in Texas and the mid-Atlantic ›

In our most recent Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO), we forecast nationwide U.S. retail electricity sales to ultimate customers will grow at an annual rate of 2.2% in both 2025 and 2026, compared with average growth of 0.8% between 2020 and 2024. The forecast reflects rapid electricity demand growth in Texas and several mid-Atlantic states, where the grid is managed by the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) and the PJM Interconnection, respectively. We expect electricity demand in ERCOT to grow at an average rate of 11% in 2025 and 2026 while the PJM region grows by 4%. More
