Early release of data on individual electric plants and generators for calendar year 2015 from the form EIA-860. The data have not been fully edited and should not be used to calculate state or national totals. Data for some plants and generators are not included pending further review and validation. Final data will be released later in 2016.

U.S. coal production during first quarter 2016 totaled 173.0 million short tons. This was 16.6% lower than the previous quarter and 28.0% lower than first quarter 2015. First quarter 2016 U.S. coal exports (14.2 million short tons) decreased 7.5% from fourth quarter 2015 and decreased 35.6% from first quarter 2015. U.S. coal imports in first quarter 2016 totaled 2.7 million short tons. All data for 2014 and prior years are final. All data for 2015 and 2016 are preliminary.

OPEC Revenues Fact Sheet

For 2015, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) estimates that members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) earned about $404 billion in net oil export revenues (unadjusted for inflation). This represents a 46% decline from the $753 billion earned in 2014, mainly as a result of a precipitous fall in average annual crude oil prices during the year, and to a lesser extent to decreases in the level of OPEC net oil exports. This revenue total was the lowest earnings for OPEC since 2010.
Drilling Productivity Report

EIA’s monthly Drilling Productivity Report (DPR) has been released. The DPR takes a fresh look at oil and natural gas production, starting with an assessment of how and where drilling for hydrocarbons is taking place. It uses recent data on the total number of drilling rigs in operation along with estimates of drilling productivity and estimated changes in production from existing oil and natural gas wells to provide estimated changes in oil and natural gas production for seven key fields.

Benchmark North Sea Brent crude oil spot prices averaged $47/barrel (b) in May, a $5/b increase from April and the fourth consecutive monthly increase since reaching a 12-year low of $31/b in January. Growing global oil supply disruptions, rising oil demand, and falling U.S. crude oil production contributed to the price increase.

Global crude oil prices increased for the fourth consecutive month in May, closing at more than $50 per barrel (b) for the first time since November 2015. The front-month Brent crude oil price increased $4.21/b since May 2, settling at $50.04/b on June 2. The West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil price increased $4.39 over the same period to settle at $49.17/b.

In this month’s issue, final monthly data and 2015 annual averages for crude oil are published in Tables 1, 1A, and 18-27. Preliminary monthly data show prices for crude oil and finished petroleum products on the rise during March, while Prime Supplier data show mixed trends for sales of petroleum products.

U.S. Natural Gas Imports & Exports 2015

Natural gas net imports fell to 935 Bcf in 2015—the lowest level since 1986. This decline in net imports continues a trend that began in 2007. Continued growth in natural gas production has contributed to changes in the natural gas imports/exports market. These changes are discussed in the U.S. Natural Gas imports and Exports 2015 report.

• In March, for the sixth straight year, dry natural gas production was the highest for the month since EIA began reporting dry natural gas production data in 1973. Preliminary dry natural gas production for March 2016 was 2,294 billion cubic feet (Bcf), or 74.0 Bcf/day. This level was a 0.1 Bcf/day (0.1%) increase from the revised March 2015 level of 73.9 Bcf/day.
• Preliminary dry natural gas consumption for March 2016 was 2,375 Bcf, or 76.6 Bcf/day. This level was a decrease of 9.2% from 2,617 Bcf in March 2015, or 7.8 Bcf/day.
• Year-over-year total consumption of dry natural gas in March decreased in the residential and commercial sectors and increased in the industrial and electric power deliveries sectors. Deliveries of natural gas by consuming sector in March 2016 were as follows:
o Residential deliveries were 457 Bcf, or 14.7 Bcf/day, down 28.3% from 20.5 Bcf/day in March 2015.
o Commercial deliveries were 299 Bcf, or 9.6 Bcf/day, down 23.1% from 12.5 Bcf/day in March 2015.
o Industrial deliveries were 668 Bcf, or 21.5 Bcf/day, up 0.8% from 21.4 Bcf/day in March 2015.
o Electric power deliveries were 740 Bcf, or 23.9 Bcf/day, up 4.4% from 22.9 Bcf/day in March 2015.
U.S. Movements of Crude Oil By Rail

Monthly data on rail movements of crude oil have been updated for March 2016. Crude oil movements by rail have significantly increased over the past five years. The new data on crude-by-rail (CBR) movements are also fully integrated with EIA’s existing monthly petroleum supply statistics, which already include crude oil movements by pipeline, tanker, and barge.

Preliminary data indicate that, in February 2016, U.S. total primary energy consumption equaled 8.3 quadrillion Btu, a 4% decrease from February 2015. The electric power sector accounted for 35% of the total, the transportation sector for 26%, the industrial sector for 22%, the residential sector for 11%, and the commercial sector for 6%.
