U.S. Energy-Related Carbon Dioxide Emissions, 2018
Nov 14, 2019
The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) has released its analysis of 2018 energy-related carbon dioxide emissions. According to the report, U.S. carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from the consumption of fossil fuels were 5,269 million metric tons (MMmt) in 2018, an increase of 2.7% (139 MMmt) from the 2017 level. Despite this increase, energy-related CO2 emissions have declined in 6 of the past 10 years. This analysis is based on data contained in the October 2019 Monthly Energy Review.
Short-Term Energy Outlook
Nov 13, 2019
Brent crude oil spot prices averaged $60 per barrel (b) in October, down $3/b from September and down $21/b from October 2018. EIA forecasts Brent spot prices will average $60/b in 2020, down from a 2019 average of $64/b. EIA forecasts that West Texas Intermediate (WTI) prices will average $5.50/b less than Brent prices in 2020. EIA expects crude oil prices will be lower on average in 2020 than in 2019 because of forecast rising global oil inventories, particularly in the first half of next year.
Sudan and South Sudan Country Analysis Brief
Nov 7, 2019
EIA has updated its country analysis Executive Summary for Sudan/South Sudan from the previous country analysis brief. The Executive Summary contains detailed information and updates to crude oil production, consumption, and exports as well as other significant changes in the countries’ energy sectors, and the Background Reference provides additional context to the Executive Summary.
In Sudan, a political transition is underway; political protests that began with grievances over the increase of prices for basic food staples has led to the removal of President al-Bashir from office. Al-Bashir is currently imprisoned while the military is leading the government in the interim. It is unclear whether the military-led government will allow for the transition to a civilian-led democracy. Meanwhile, South Sudan is still attempting to attract more foreign investment in order to boost its crude oil production and bring much-needed revenue, but the country has yet to resolve issues regarding security and stable governance.
