Jan 11, 2024 This site contains spreadsheets with wholesale electricity and natural gas data from seven major trading hubs that cover most regions of the United States. The data are through January 9, 2024, republished, with permission, from the Intercontinental Exchange (ICE).
Jan 9, 2024 This edition of our Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO) is the first to include forecasts for 2025. Electricity generation. We expect solar power to be the leading source of growth in electricity generation in both 2024 and 2025 as 36 gigawatts (GW) and 43 GW of new solar capacity come on line, respectively. The new capacity will boost the solar share of total generation to 6% in 2024 and 7% in 2025, up from 4% in 2023. We forecast that overall U.S. electricity generation will grow by 3% in 2024 and be unchanged in 2025. Driven by our forecast of rising generation from solar and to a lesser extent wind, we expect that electricity generation from coal will decline by 9% in 2024 and by 10% in 2025, due to a combination of higher costs compared with renewables and another 12 GW of coal-fired capacity retiring over the next two years. We expect that electricity generation from natural gas will be unchanged in 2024 and 2025 compared with 2023.
Jan 5, 2024 Annual state-level estimates of natural gas consumption, prices, and expenditures.
Jan 5, 2024 We have created a new dashboard of renewable electric energy in our U.S. Energy Atlas. This dashboard will consolidate the previous Biomass, Geothermal, Hydroelectric, Wind, and Solar maps into one new product that includes a map as well as charts and tables. This new tool provides stakeholders the ability to make selections and filter by state or renewable source.
Jan 2, 2024 The Quarterly Coal Distribution Report (QCDR) provides detailed U.S. domestic coal distribution data (excluding waste coal and imports) for third-quarter 2023 by coal-origin state, coal-destination state, mode of transportation, and consuming sector. Quarterly coal distribution data for all quarters are preliminary and will be updated in the corresponding Annual Coal Distribution Report.
Jan 2, 2024 The January 2024 Petroleum Marketing Monthly (PMM), with data through October 2023 presents monthly and annual price and volume statistics for crude oil sales in the United States.
Jan 2, 2024 U.S. coal production during the third quarter of 2023 totaled 145.6 million short tons (MMst), which was 2.3% higher than the previous quarter and 5.7% lower than the third quarter of 2022. Third-quarter 2023 U.S. coal exports (24.9 MMst) increased 3.2% from second-quarter 2023 and increased 17.9% from third-quarter 2022. U.S. coal imports in the third quarter of 2023 totaled 1 MMst. All data for 2022 and previous years are final. All data for 2023 are preliminary.
Dec 29, 2023 In October 2023, dry natural gas production increased year over year for the month for the 30th consecutive month. Preliminary dry natural gas production in October 2023 was 3,240 billion cubic feet (Bcf), or 104.5 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d). Production was 2.2% (2.3 Bcf/d) higher in October 2023 than in October 2022 (102.3 Bcf/d) and the highest for any month since 1973, when we began tracking dry natural gas production. Gross withdrawals also increased from October 2022.
Dec 29, 2023 These monthly production estimates are based on data from Form EIA-914, Monthly Crude Oil, Lease Condensate, and Natural Gas Production Report.
Dec 29, 2023 The U.S. Energy Information Administration release showing national monthly biofuels operable production capacity.
Dec 29, 2023 Imports data at the company level collected from Form EIA-814, Monthly Imports Report.
Dec 29, 2023 Monthly data on rail movements of crude oil have been updated for October 2023. Crude oil movements by rail have significantly increased during the past five years. The data on crude-by-rail (CBR) movements are also fully integrated with EIA’s existing monthly petroleum supply statistics, which already include crude oil movements by pipeline, tanker, and barge.
Dec 29, 2023 Supply and disposition of crude oil and petroleum products on a national and regional level. The data describe production, imports and exports, movements, and inventories.
Dec 28, 2023 This site contains spreadsheets with wholesale electricity and natural gas data from seven major trading hubs that cover most regions of the United States. The data are through December 26, 2023, republished, with permission, from the Intercontinental Exchange
Dec 27, 2023 Our Well Distribution Report presents historical, annual state-level data on well distribution by size and technology and analyzes emerging trends for 2022. Crude oil and natural gas wells drilled horizontally through hydrocarbon-bearing formations are among the most productive wells in the United States. The total number of horizontally drilled wells has increased over 78% since 2014. In 2022, 77% of the more than 912,000 U.S. wells produced less than 15 barrels of oil equivalent per day. These wells are mostly older and drilled vertically.

We updated Analyses and Quick Facts for:
Dec 21, 2023 The Monthly Energy Review is our comprehensive report on recent and historical energy statistics. According to our December 2023 report, preliminary estimates for September 2023 indicate that U.S. primary energy consumption totaled 7.4 quadrillion British thermal units, which was virtually unchanged from September 2022.
Dec 21, 2023 Data in the December 2023 Electric Power Monthly (EPM) are for October 2023, when net generation in the United States was up 4.9% from October 2022. Consumption of natural gas for power generation was up 7.1% compared with October 2022. The average residential retail price of electricity was up 1.4% from October 2022.
Dec 19, 2023 We released a list of our notable accomplishments for 2023, highlighting our products and programs from this year.
Dec 18, 2023 This analysis focuses on the financial and operating trends of 142 global oil and natural gas companies from 2018 through third-quarter 2023.
Dec 18, 2023 The Drilling Productivity Report has been updated with the latest charts and methodology. This report uses recent data on the total number of drilling rigs in operation along with estimates of drilling productivity and estimated changes in production from existing oil and natural gas wells to provide estimated changes in oil and natural gas production for seven key regions.
Dec 18, 2023 We have released a new set of data tables for commercial buildings using only electricity for certain end uses. These estimates may serve as a baseline for electrification policies and to understand the market for all-electric building technologies and equipment.
Dec 18, 2023 We updated the Lower 48 states shale and tight formation oil and natural gas plays map. This map is based on recent well-level data, including formation depth and reservoir properties, along with hydrocarbon production, and shows major play extends in the key producing basins in the Lower 48 states.
As U.S. crude oil and natural gas production have increased, so has the volume of production declines from existing wells. To offset the increasing declines, operators today must bring on new wells to sustain or increase production levels. More ›
