EIA has refreshed the data for U.S. Natural Gas Imports & Exports 2011 the 2011 Annual Imports/Exports product to reflect the most recent import and /export data reflected published in the June 2012 Natural Gas Monthly. Since the initial original publication of U.S. Natural Gas Imports & Exports 2011 on Friday, July 13, 2012, data on reflecting imports of natural gas for 2011 were increased by 3 billion cubic feet (Bcf) to 3,456 Bcf. Net imports reflected the same increase and are 1,949 Bcf, remaining at the lowest level since 1992.

The Gulf of Mexico (GOM) Fact Sheet includes a compilation of energy data and an interactive map of major energy infrastructure. It includes updated GOM statistics related to petroleum and other liquids supply, natural gas supply, refining capacity, and natural gas plant capacity. Gulf of Mexico statistics related to proved reserves of crude oil and natural gas will be updated after the release of the upcoming U.S. Crude Oil, Natural Gas, and Natural Gas Liquids Reserves.

Prices: Crude oil futures prices continued their downward trend for the first half of June but rebounded over the week from June 29 to July 5. Both crude oil benchmarks are currently close to their settlement prices at the beginning of June (Figure 1). The outcome from the European Union summit, which alleviated some short-term fears of a banking crisis, held on June 29 has contributed to the recent rise in oil prices. Reports that Saudi Arabia is beginning to cut back production could also be contributing to the recent price increases.

EIA projects the West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil spot price to average about $88 per barrel over the second half of 2012 and the U.S. refiner acquisition cost (RAC) of crude oil to average $93 per barrel, both about $7 per barrel lower than last month's Outlook. EIA expects WTI and RAC crude oil prices to remain roughly at these second half levels in 2013. Beginning in this month's Outlook, EIA is also providing a forecast of Brent crude oil spot prices (see Brent Crude Oil Spot Price Added to Forecast), which are expected to average $106 per barrel for 2012 and $98 per barrel in 2013. These price forecasts assume that world oil-consumption-weighted real gross domestic product (GDP) grows by 2.9 percent in both 2012 and 2013.

Natural gas production grew by 7.9 percent in 2011, with large gains in onshore production offsetting continuing declines in the Gulf of Mexico. Production grew despite a year over year decline in prices. Growth in the electric power and industrial sectors drove overall increases in total consumption. Strength in domestic supplies, as well as mild weather in the fourth quarter of the year, reduced the need for pipeline imports, while pipeline exports from the U.S. to Mexico increased substantially.

Shale gas refers to natural gas that is trapped within shale formations. Shales are fine-grained sedimentary rocks that can be rich sources of petroleum and natural gas. Over the past decade, the combination of horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing has allowed access to large volumes of shale gas that were previously uneconomical to produce.

U.S. coal production, employment, and productivity are based on the U.S. Department of Labor’s Mine Safety and Health Administration’s Form 7000-2, “Quarterly Mine Employment and Coal Production Report.” Prices, recoverable reserves, and productive capacity are based on EIA’s annual survey form, EIA-7A, “Coal Production and Preparation Report.” Please note that data have been revised for 2010 receipts, consumption, stocks, and average price data for U.S. manufacturing, as well as data reported for Texas and the West South Central Census Division, as applicable to this report. All data for 2010 and prior years are final.

Monthly sales data for April 2012 show a downturn in crude oil prices in most sales categories, while refiner prices for many of the surveyed finished petroleum products also saw decreases from March levels. Data covering prime supplier sales of finished petroleum products sold for local consumption show little change in gasoline sales at the U.S. level, while sales of distillates and other products show varying amounts of change.
