U.S. natural gas stocks end heating season at the lowest level since 2014
Apr 11, 2019
Working natural gas in storage in the Lower 48 states as of March 31, the traditional end of the heating season (November 1–March 31), totaled 1,137 billion cubic feet (Bcf), according to EIA’s Weekly Natural Gas Storage Report released on April 11. As of March 31, estimated working gas stocks were 491 Bcf (30%) lower than the current five-year (2014–18) average for the end of the heating season. The 2018–19 heating season had the lowest level of working gas stocks in the United States for this time of year since 2014, when working gas stocks ended the 2013–14 heating season at 837 Bcf because of multiple, intense cold snaps. In 2018, working gas stocks ended the winter at 1,360 Bcf.
Liquefied natural gas imports played a key role in reducing price spikes in New England this winter
Apr 11, 2019
During winter 2018–19, timely natural gas supply provided by imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) at major regasification facilities serving New England played an important role in moderating natural gas prices in the region. The chart below shows that deliveries from regional LNG regasification facilities or sendout (the brown line) generally increased, especially during peak demand periods in January and February, in response to spot natural gas prices (the blue line) at the Algonquin Citygate, a widely referenced trading hub and benchmark for natural gas prices in New England.
Short-Term Energy Outlook
Apr 9, 2019
For the 2019 summer driving season that runs from April through September, EIA forecasts that U.S. regular gasoline retail prices will average $2.76 per gallon (gal), down from an average of $2.85/gal last summer. EIA’s forecast is discussed in its Summer Fuels Outlook. The lower forecast gasoline prices primarily reflect EIA’s expectation of lower crude oil prices in 2019. For all of 2019, EIA expects U.S. regular gasoline retail prices to average $2.60/gal and gasoline retail prices for all grades to average $2.71/gal, which would result in the average U.S. household spending about $100 (4%) less on motor fuel in 2019 compared with 2018.
Natural gas design capacity and demonstrated peak capacity both declined slightly in 2018
Apr 8, 2019
During the past five years, only a small amount of new underground natural gas storage capacity was built in the Lower 48 states and no new storage facilities have entered operation in that time. EIA measures underground natural gas storage capacity in two ways: design capacity and demonstrated maximum working gas volume (or demonstrated peak). Both of these metrics showed decreases in 2018, with design capacity falling by 0.3%, or 13 Bcf, and demonstrated peak capacity falling by 1.2%, or 54 Bcf.
