Quarterly Coal Report - 1st Quarter 2005
Jun 23, 2005
This issue provides detailed quarterly data for January-March 2005 and the previous quarter, and aggregated historical data for 1999 through the first quarter 2005 on the U.S. coal industry. Information includes: U.S. coal production, distribution, exports, imports, receipts, prices, consumption, stocks, and quality; and U.S. coke production, consumption, distribution, imports, and exports. EIA has determined that the price range ($20 to $55 per ton) used previously for coal exports and imports is no longer necessary. These changes are effective with data reported for 2005 Quarter 1 and will be applied in all future reports. All data for 2003 and prior years are final. Coal data collection on the EIA-3, ¿Quarterly Coal Consumption and Quality Report - Manufacturing Plants¿ and EIA-5, ¿Quarterly Coal Consumption and Quality Report - Coke Plants¿ for 2004 are final. All other data for 2004 are preliminary. Electric power data for 2004 are revised. The Quarterly Coal Report is available only in electronic format on the EIA¿s Coal page. Monthly Flash Estimates of Electric Power Data
Jun 21, 2005
contains preliminary estimates of selected national monthly electricity data. It serves as an early release (approximately 30 days) of the more detailed Electric Power Monthly report.
Generation in April 2005 was down by 8.7 percent from March 2005 as the power market entered the trough of the spring shoulder season. Year-to-date, generation is down 0.4 percent. Through the first quarter of the year, 2005 has been milder than 2004, with fewer heating and cooling degree days. In April 2005 gas generation is up 2 percent while oil-fired generation is off by almost 24 percent. Hydroelectric generation is up by 3.7 percent, due to a wet spring. Nuclear generation is down 3.2 percent year-to-date due to planned or forced outages.
The average retail price of electricity shows an increase over the prior 12 month period of 2.6 percent and an increase year-to-date of 4 percent. The increases are primarily due to the price of fuel and the fuel mix used in generating power.
Coal stocks increased sharply for the second month in a row, up by 10 percent from March 2005.
