The June edition provides early highlights of April 2011 electricity data. In April 2011, total electric power generation in the United States increased 4.1 percent compared to April 2010. The average U.S. retail price of electricity increased 1.0 percent in April 2011 compared to the previous year.

Refinery Capacity Report

Data series include fuel, electricity, and steam purchased for consumption at the refinery; refinery receipts of crude oil by method of transportation; current and projected capacities for atmospheric crude oil distillation, downstream charge, production, and storage capacities. Respondents are operators of all operating and idle petroleum refineries (including new refineries under construction) and refineries shut down during the previous year, located in the 50 States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Guam, and other U.S. possessions.

Prime Supplier Report

The latest Prime Supplier Report presents data collected through April 2011 on Form EIA-782C, "Monthly Report of Prime Supplier Sales of Petroleum Products Sold for Local Consumption." These data measure primary petroleum product deliveries into the States where they are locally marketed and consumed.

Rail Coal Transportation Rates to the Electric Power Sector

New average annual rail transportation rates and analysis for coal shipments to the electric power sector are based on the carload waybill sample obtained from the U.S. Surface Transportation Board. Data are aggregated across select state-to-state and coal basin-to-state combinations for 2001 to 2008. The data show that average nominal rates for the United States increased by 40 percent between 2001 and 2008 (real rates increased by almost 11 percent during that same time) but that average rates between specific states varied greatly.

OPEC Revenues Factsheet

Based on projections from the EIA June 2011 Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO), members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) could earn $1,034 billion of net oil export revenues in 2011 and $1,117 billion in 2012. Saudi Arabia earned the largest share of these earnings in 2010, representing 29 percent of total OPEC revenues. On a per-capita basis, OPEC net oil export earnings reached $2,074 in 2010.

This June issue contains data for March 2011, during which net generation in the United States rose 2.0 percent from the March 2010 level. Consumption of coal for power generation fell 5.5 percent compared to March 2010. The average retail price of electricity for March 2011 was 9.66 cents per kilowatthour, 0.9 percent higher than March 2010, when the price was 9.57 cents per kWh.

Annual State-level estimates of energy consumption, prices, and expenditures by sector. U.S. total energy expenditures equaled $1.1 trillion in 2009, a 25% decrease from 2008. The States with the largest expenditures were Texas, which accounted for 11% of U.S. energy expenditures; California, which accounted for 10%; and New York and Florida, which each accounted for 5%.

March monthly average crude oil prices show considerable increases from February levels. Refiner prices for finished petroleum products also show significant increases in March. Sales for consumption of finished gasoline rose modestly overall month-on-month, as did consumption of No. 2 diesel fuel.

The May issue of the NGM, featuring data for March 2011, is now available. The preliminary estimate of net imports of natural gas in the United States totaled 177 billion cubic feet (Bcf) for the month. This is the result of a reduction in imports and growth in exports for natural gas in the United States in March.
