Sudan and South Sudan Country Analysis Brief

Mar 19, 2012
Although Sudan and South Sudan are now separate countries, they are negotiating an oil transit fee, since about three-quarters of oil production originates from South Sudan, while the entire pipeline, refining, and export infrastructure is in Sudan. At the end of January, as a result of an impasse over a transit fee and other issues, South Sudan shut in all of its oil production.

Who are the major players supplying the world oil market?

Mar 15, 2012

How can we compare or add up our energy consumption?

Mar 15, 2012
To compare or aggregate energy consumption across different energy sources like oil, natural gas, and electricity, we must use a common unit of measure. This is similar to calculating your food energy intake by adding up the calories in whatever you eat.

Sales of Fossil Fuels Produced from Federal and Indian Lands, FY 2003 through FY 2011

Mar 14, 2012
Since 2003 changes in offshore production from the Federal Outer Continental Shelf have been the main driver of changes in crude oil production from Federal and Indian lands, according to data from the Office of Natural Resource Revenues at the U.S. Department of the Interior. Total crude oil sales from Federal and Indian lands increased from 642 million barrels in FY 2009 to 739 million barrels in FY 2010, but decreased to 646 million barrels in FY 2011. Natural gas production from Federal and Indian lands has declined every year since 2003, while coal production has remained fairly steady.

Short-Term Energy Outlook - Market Prices and Uncertainty Report

Mar 6, 2012
The increase in oil prices over the last month is a reflection of the current tight balance between global supply and demand. EIA estimates that spare production capacity averaged 2.6 million barrels per day in January and February, less than 3 percent of global consumption and a decrease of 1.1 million barrels per day from one year ago. Most of the oil production from Yemen, Syria and South Sudan continues to be shut-in and has contributed to the reduction in global spare production capacity.

Short-Term Energy Outlook

Mar 6, 2012
EIA expects the price of West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil to average about $106 per barrel in 2012, $5 per barrel higher than in the previous Outlook and $11 per barrel higher than the average price last year. Supply disruptions in the Middle East and Africa contributed to a significant increase in world crude oil prices during February. EIA has increased the forecast 2012 average cost of crude oil to U.S.

Natural Gas Monthly

Feb 29, 2012
The February 2012 Natural Gas Monthly, featuring data through December 2011, has been released. Spurred by shale drilling and resulting lower price levels, the preliminary year-end data for 2011 indicate that both natural gas production and consumption levels were at record-levels, with gross production at 28.6 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) and total consumption at 24.4 Tcf, an increase 6.5 and 2.5 percent above 2010 levels, respectively. Additionally, this issue of the Natural Gas Monthly features State-level gas consumption and prices used for electricity generation through December 2011 (the State-level data formerly lagged 30 days behind the other gas consumption series).

Also included in this publication are two additional pages for Table 26 that provide October and November data. With the release of the next Petroleum Supply Monthly and subsequent issues, revised State-level data from previous months will be reported in the Petroleum Navigator. State data will be revised monthly.
