Natural gas storage capacity increases in 2012

Working natural gas storage capacity increased by about 2 percent in the Lower 48 states between November 2011 and November 2012, according to Underground Working Natural Gas Storage Capacity, released today by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).
U.S. Natural Gas Imports & Exports 2012

In the face of unprecedented levels of domestic natural gas production, net imports of natural gas into the United States fell 23 percent in 2012. A combination of both higher exports and lower imports led to a decline in net imports. In 2012, total imports decreased by 10 percent to 3,135 Bcf, while total exports increased by 8 percent to 1,619 Bcf.

These data measure primary petroleum product deliveries into the States where they are locally marketed and consumed.

EIA estimates that Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), not including Iran, earned about $982 billion in net oil export revenues in 2012, a 5-percent increase from 2011, and the largest level over the 1975-2012 period for which EIA tracks OPEC oil revenues. Saudi Arabia earned the largest share of these earnings, $311 billion in 2012, representing approximately 32 percent of total OPEC revenues.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) expects that the Brent crude oil spot price will average $102 per barrel over the second half of 2013, and $100 per barrel in 2014. This forecast assumes there are no disruptions to energy markets arising from the recent unrest in Egypt. After increasing to $119 per barrel in early February 2013, the Brent crude oil spot price fell to a low of $97 per barrel in mid-April and then recovered to an average of $103 per barrel in May and June, about the same as its average over the same two-month period last year.

During June and the first week of July, Brent crude oil prices remained in the roughly $100 to $106 per barrel range that has held prices since mid-April. The front month futures contract for Brent settled at $105.76 per barrel on July 3, an increase of $3.70 per barrel compared to its settle price on June 3 and at the top of its recent range.

Provides detailed quarterly coal data for January–March 2013. U.S. coal production during first quarter 2013 totaled 245.1 million short tons. This was about 1.8% lower than the previous quarter and 8.0% lower than the first quarter 2012. Production in the Western Region, which represented 52.7% of total U.S. production, dropped to 129.2 million short tons from 136.7 million short tons in fourth quarter 2012. This report now includes summary statistics for coal refining plants. All data for 2011 and prior years are final. All data for 2012 and 2013 are preliminary.

In this issue of the Petroleum Marketing Monthly, preliminary April 2013 data show prices for crude oil and refined petroleum products were firmly on the decline. Prime Supplier data show another modest increase in gasoline consumption in the United States, while consumption of ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel experienced a more substantial month-on-month gain.

The June Natural Gas Monthly, with data through April 2013, has been released.
• Dry gas production for April was 1,985 billion cubic feet (Bcf) or 66.2 Bcf/day, which is the highest on record for the month. It showed a small increase from last April’s 1,963 Bcf, or 65.4 Bcf/day.
• Total consumption of natural gas for April 2013 was 1,946 Bcf, the second highest consumption on record for the month, a slight decrease from last April’s record-setting 1,956 Bcf.

The ninth in a series of reports required by section 1245 (d) (4) (A) of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2012, which requires that, not later than 60 days from enactment and every 60 days thereafter, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) “submit to Congress a report on the availability and price of petroleum and petroleum products produced in countries other than Iran in the 60-day period preceding the submission of the report.”
