Short-Term Energy Outlook

Feb 9, 2021
The February Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO) remains subject to heightened levels of uncertainty because responses to COVID-19 continue to evolve. Reduced economic activity related to the COVID-19 pandemic has caused changes in energy demand and supply over the past year and will continue to affect these patterns in the future. U.S. gross domestic product (GDP) declined by 3.6% in 2020 from 2019 levels. This STEO assumes U.S. GDP will grow by 3.8% in 2021 and by 4.2% in 2022. The U.S. macroeconomic assumptions in this outlook are based on forecasts by IHS Markit.

The data on crude-by-rail (CBR) movements are also fully integrated with EIA’s existing monthly petroleum supply statistics, which already include crude oil movements by pipeline, tanker, and barge.

Natural Gas Monthly

Jan 29, 2021
In November 2020, for the seventh consecutive month, dry natural gas production decreased year over year for the month. The preliminary level for dry natural gas production in November 2020 was 2,757 billion cubic feet (Bcf), or 91.9 Bcf/d. This level was 4.8 Bcf/d (-5.0%) lower than the November 2019 level of 96.7 Bcf/d. Despite this year-over-year decrease, the average daily rate of dry production was the second highest for the month since the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) began tracking monthly dry production in 1973.

ISO-New England’s annual Forward Capacity Market auction to take place on February 8, 2021

Jan 28, 2021
On Tuesday, February 8, 2021, the Independent System Operator for New England (ISO-NE) will open its annual Forward Capacity Market (FCM) auction. ISO-NE uses the FCM auctions to ensure that the New England power system will have sufficient resources to meet future demand for electricity. Owners of various electricity-related resources (such as generating capacity, demand-side resources, or interregional electricity imports) compete in these auctions to obtain a market-priced capacity payment in exchange for providing electricity resources. This transaction is called a Capacity Supply Obligation (CSO).

Malaysia Country Analysis Brief

Jan 25, 2021
Malaysia is the second-largest oil and natural gas producer in Southeast Asia and is the world’s fifth-largest exporter of liquefied natural gas. It is strategically located amid important routes for seaborne energy trade. Rising domestic and regional energy demand has prompted Malaysia to invest in upstream oil and natural gas projects and in downstream infrastructure such as oil and natural gas import terminals, storage facilities, and refining capacity to ensure adequate energy supply.

Angola Country Analysis Brief

Jan 25, 2021
Angola is the second-largest producer in Africa, following Nigeria, and its economy depends heavily on hydrocarbon production for revenue. As a member of OPEC, Angola has agreed to limit its monthly crude oil production as part of the April 15, 2020 agreement, which was made in response to the acute drop in economic activity and global crude oil demand caused by the outbreak of COVID-19. The economic crisis caused by COVID-19 as also affected Angola’s plan to increase production; drilling in its offshore fields was temporarily suspended in 2020 after international oil companies cut back on capital spending and final investment decisions were delayed for projects that were under development. Against this backdrop, the Angolan government has sought debt relief measures to alleviate its economic hardship, particularly with China and the IMF.

Drilling Productivity Report

Jan 19, 2021
Falling crude oil demand and prices, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, caused May 2020 oil production in North Dakota to decline by more than 40% from the peak month of October 2019. The January supplement to the Drilling Productivity Report explains how the base production (production from wells more than one year old) has returned to pre-pandemic levels and the swing production (production from wells less than a year old) has not because a lower rate of new well completions has resulted in fewer new wells.

Electricity use for commercial computing could surpass space cooling, ventilation ›

In our Annual Energy Outlook 2025 (AEO2025) Reference case, we project the electricity consumed for commercial computing will increase faster than any other end use in buildings. Computing accounted for an estimated 8% of commercial sector electricity consumption in 2024 and grows to 20% by 2050. Ultimately, more electricity could be consumed by computing than for any other end use in the commercial sector, including lighting, space cooling, and ventilation. More
