Duties
Katie Lewis serves as the Director for the Office of Hydrocarbons, providing leadership and strategic direction for EIA’s data programs on petroleum and liquid fuels markets, oil and natural gas production, and coal. In this role, Katie also oversees the development of both the short and long term outlooks for these sectors.
Biography
Since joining EIA in 2008, Katie has held multiple leadership and technical roles. From 2025 to 2026, Katie led the Survey Quality Team in the Office of Survey Operations, managing data quality for EIA’s survey data collection. Before that, Katie led the Data Analytics Team, advancing the Office of Energy Statistics through research, development, innovation, process improvement, and coding. She led eight projects that streamlined and automated processes in Python, saving staff time and improving data quality.
From 2022 to 2023, Katie led the Oil and Gas Production and Petroleum Supply Team, directing EIA’s weekly, monthly, and annual petroleum supply and oil and gas production statistics. In this role, she led a six month, multiteam research project examining the rising crude oil adjustment, which resulted in survey and methodological changes to address the underlying causes.
Earlier in her career, Katie served in a technical leadership role for EIA’s Commercial Buildings Energy Consumption Survey and Residential Energy Consumption Survey. In that role, Katie was the lead statistician for frame construction, sample design, weighting, estimation, and imputation and also provided broader survey methodology support. She led multiple research projects on using satellite maps to construct the frame of commercial buildings, using self-administered modes for the consumption surveys and collecting data for data center buildings.
Katie has an MS in statistics from The George Washington University and a BA in mathematics from Wittenberg University.
