Highlights: January 2026

  • The Northeast saw an 8.2% year-over-year increase in electricity generation, mainly due to experiencing cooler temperatures this January compared to the previous year.

  • Southern Company saw its January 2026 daily peak electricity demand very close to its all-time peak demand because the Southeast portion of the U.S. experienced a significant winter storm during the month that spiked electricity demand in the region.

  • Total U.S. coal stockpiles decreased by 5% to 104 million tons compared to the previous month.
