February monthly average crude oil prices rose in all categories of sales. In addition, monthly average prices for finished gasoline, diesel fuel, heating oil, residual fuel oil, kerosene-type jet fuel, and propane continued to rise in February.

The April issue of the NGM, featuring data for February 2011, is now available. U.S. marketed natural gas production in February showed a decrease of 1.7 percent, or 1.06 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d). Cold weather in Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Wyoming was largely responsible for the decrease, which totaled 1.245 Bcf/d in these States.

Alternatives to Traditional Transportation Fuels 2009

EIA publishes data on alternative fueled vehicles (AFVs) supplied each year as well as estimates on the total inventory of AFVs in use in the U.S. and the fuels they consume. In 2009, a total of 1,076,350 alternative fuel and hybrid vehicles were made available in the U.S., a 29% decrease from a year ago. The supply of E85 flexible fuel vehicles continues to dominate the vehicles market with nearly 75% of the total AFV and hybrid vehicles made available in 2009. EIA estimates an inventory of AFVs in use by fleets in the U.S. of 826,318 in 2009, 6.5% more than a year ago. The total alternative fuel consumption for 2009 is estimated at 431,107 thousand gasoline-equivalent gallons, up slightly from 2008.

Provides state-level data for capacity, generation, retail sales, and emissions. In 2009, Texas was the leading State for retail sales (345 TWh) and net generation (397 TWh). California was the second leading State for retail sales ( 259 TWh) while Pennsylvania was the second leading State for net generation (219 TWh). Wyoming had the lowest average retail price for electric power (6.08 cents/kWh) while Hawaii had the highest average retail price (21.2 cents/kWh).

The April issue provides early highlights of February 2011 electricity data. In February 2011, total electric power generation in the United States decreased 3.0 percent compared to February 2010. The average U.S. retail price of electricity increased 3.0 percent in February 2011 compared to the previous year.

This latest issue contains data for January 2011. Net generation in the United States rose 0.8 percent from the January 2010 level. Consumption of coal for power generation fell 0.5 percent compared to January 2010. The average retail price of electricity for January 2011 was 9.62 cents per kilowatthour, 3.0 percent higher than January 2010, when the price was 9.34 cents per kWh.
World Shale Gas Resources: An Initial Assessment of 14 Regions Outside the United States

Initial assessments of 48 shale gas basins in 32 countries suggest that shale gas resources, which have recently provided a major boost to U.S. natural gas production, are also available in other world regions. The EIA-sponsored study reported initial assessments of 5,760 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of technically recoverable shale gas resources in 32 foreign countries, compared with 862 Tcf in the United States.
