The August Natural Gas Monthly, with data through June 2013, has been released.
• Monthly dry gas production for June was 1,989 billion cubic feet (Bcf), or 66.3 Bcf/day, level with the revised dry production for May of 2,055 or 66.3 Bcf/day.
• Total consumption of natural gas for June 2013 was 1,726 Bcf or 57.5 Bcf/day, an 8 percent decrease from June 2012.

The Caspian Sea region is one of the oldest oil-producing areas in the world and is quickly growing as a natural gas production hub. EIA estimates 48 billion barrels of oil and 292 trillion cubic feet of natural gas in proved and probable reserves in the Caspian Sea and surrounding basins. However, the Caspian region faces several challenges to oil and natural gas extraction, including difficulties in moving products to world markets and finding sufficient investment for major projects, such as Kazakhstan’s Kashagan oil field.

The eastern Mediterranean region—defined in this report as Cyprus, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and the Palestinian Territories—is currently undergoing changes to its energy landscape. With expected economic growth, and the population of the region forecast to grow from 45.3 million in 2010 to between 58 and 62 million in 2030, energy demand should increase noticeably over the next two decades. At present levels of consumption, regional oil and natural gas reserves are unlikely to last for more than a few decades. Fortunately, recent discoveries of large hydrocarbon resources—particularly natural gas—in the offshore Levant Basin significantly alter the supply-side forecasts for the region. These discoveries have the potential to provide the necessary energy supply to meet growing regional demand and possibly even spur exports.

The Residential Energy Consumption Survey (RECS) gathers information through personal interviews with a nationwide sample of homes and energy suppliers. The 2009 survey was the largest RECS to date and the larger sample size allowed for the release of data for 16 individual states, in addition to national, regional, and division-level estimates.

Short-Term Energy Outlook - Market Prices and Uncertainty Report

Front month futures prices for both the Brent and WTI crude oil benchmarks rose over the last month, with WTI rising faster than Brent to sharply narrow the spread between the two benchmarks. Since July 1, Brent has increased by $6.54 per barrel to settle at $109.54 per barrel on August 1. Over the same time period, WTI increased by $9.90 per barrel to settle at $107.89. While the August 1 settle was the highest price for Brent since early April of this year, the July 19 settle price of $108.05 for WTI was the highest since March of 2012.

Crude oil prices increased during the first three weeks of July 2013 as world oil markets tightened in the face of seasonal increases in world consumption, unexpected supply disruptions, and heightened uncertainty over the security of supply with the renewed unrest in Egypt. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) expects that the Brent crude oil spot price, which averaged $108 per barrel over the first half of 2013, will average $104 per barrel over the second half of 2013, and $100 per barrel in 2014.
