Petroleum Supply Monthly

Supply and disposition of crude oil and petroleum products on a national and regional level. New historical data for rail movements of biodiesel and ethanol between Petroleum Administration for Defense Districts (PADDs) were made available today with release of Petroleum Supply Monthly (PSM) data for February 2016.

U.S. Movements of Crude Oil By Rail

Monthly data on rail movements of crude oil have been updated for February 2016. Crude oil movements by rail have significantly increased over the past five years. The new data on crude-by-rail (CBR) movements are also fully integrated with EIA’s existing monthly petroleum supply statistics, which already include crude oil movements by pipeline, tanker, and barge.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration released new data today showing national and regional monthly biodiesel production for February 2016. In addition to biodiesel production, data included producer sales, producer stocks, and feedstock inputs.

• In February, for the third straight year, dry natural gas production was the highest for the month since EIA began reporting dry natural gas production data in 1973. Preliminary dry natural gas production for February 2016 was 2,183 billion cubic feet (Bcf), or 75.3 Bcf/day. This level was a 1.7 Bcf/day (2.3%) increase from February 2015 production of 73.6 Bcf/day. • Preliminary dry natural gas consumption for February 2016 was 2,703 Bcf, or 93.2 Bcf/day. This level was a decrease of 11.6% from 2,952 Bcf in February 2015, or 12.2 Bcf/day. • Year-over-year total consumption of dry natural gas in February decreased in three of the four consuming sectors, with the exception being electric power deliveries, which increased year to year. Deliveries of natural gas by consuming sector in February 2016 were as follows: o Residential deliveries were 707 Bcf, or 24.4 Bcf/day, down 24.5% from 32.3 Bcf/day in February 2015. o Commercial deliveries were 421 Bcf, or 14.5 Bcf/day, down 21.8% from 18.6 Bcf/day in February 2015. o Industrial deliveries were 668 Bcf, or 23.0 Bcf/day, down 2.6% from 23.6 Bcf/day in February 2015. o Electric power deliveries were 692 Bcf, or 23.9 Bcf/day, up 2.6% from 23.3 Bcf/day in February 2015.

Iraq is OPEC’s second-largest crude oil producer and holds the fifth-largest proved crude oil reserves in the world. In 2015, Iraq’s production increased by almost 700,000 b/d compared with the production level in 2014, representing the largest year-over-year increase since Iraq’s production recovery in 2004, following the start of the Iraq war.

These data measure primary petroleum product deliveries into the states where they are locally marketed and consumed.

After increasing at the start of March, crude oil prices stabilized and traded within a relatively narrow range through the first week of April. The North Sea Brent front month futures price rose $2.62 per barrel (b) from March 1 to settle at $39.43/b on April 7 (Figure 1). The West Texas Intermediate (WTI) front month futures price rose $2.86/b and settled at $37.26 over the same period.

During the 2016 April-through-September summer driving season, U.S. regular gasoline retail prices are forecast to average $2.04/gallon (gal), compared with $2.63/gal last summer (see EIA Summer Fuels Outlook presentation). For all of 2016, the forecast average price is $1.94/gal, which if realized would save the average U.S. household about $350 on gasoline in 2016 compared with 2015, with annual average motor fuel expenditures at the lowest level in 12 years.

Drilling Productivity Report

EIA’s monthly Drilling Productivity Report (DPR) has been released. The DPR takes a fresh look at oil and natural gas production, starting with an assessment of how and where drilling for hydrocarbons is taking place. It uses recent data on the total number of drilling rigs in operation along with estimates of drilling productivity and estimated changes in production from existing oil and natural gas wells to provide estimated changes in oil and natural gas production for seven key fields.

Starting with this release of January 2016 data, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) included new data on ethanol and biodiesel transported by railroads. EIA now reports monthly rail movements for crude oil, ethanol, and biodiesel.

Petroleum Marketing Monthly

The April 2016 Petroleum Marketing Monthly (PMM), with data through January 2016, presents monthly and annual price and volume statistics covering crude oil and refined products sales in the United States. In this issue of the PMM, final 2015 annual averages are available for finished petroleum products in Tables 2 through 17. Preliminary monthly data show prices for crude oil and finished petroleum products continued to decline in January, while Prime Supplier data show sales of gasoline and No. 2 distillates fell from December levels. Also, updated state motor fuels tax information is available on the PMM website.
