Monthly Energy Review

Jun 25, 2025
The Monthly Energy Review is our comprehensive report on recent and historical energy statistics. According to our June 2025 report, preliminary estimates indicate that U.S. total primary energy consumption equaled 7.8 quadrillion British thermal units in March 2025, a 1% increase from March 2024. Primary energy consumption in the electric power sector accounted for 31% of the total, the transportation sector for 30%, the industrial sector for 24%, the residential sector for 9%, and the commercial sector for 6%.

This early release includes individual plant and generator data. However, we have not fully edited the data, and so these data are inappropriate for aggregation, such as to state or national totals. We have withheld some data from this early release pending further validation. We will release final 2024 data in September.

Ukraine Country Analysis Brief

Jun 11, 2025
Since Russia’s invasion in February 2022, Ukraine has accelerated integration of its energy trade and infrastructure with Europe, moving away from its historical ties with Russia. This integration includes trade and infrastructure related to oil, natural gas, coal, electricity, and other energy sources. Ukraine halted natural gas trade with Russia and natural gas transit from Russia as of January 1, 2025.

Short-Term Energy Outlook

Jun 10, 2025
Trade policy assumptions. The U.S. macroeconomic outlook we use in the Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO) is based on S&P Global’s macroeconomic model. S&P Global’s most recent model reflects the tariffs announced in April and includes the 90-day temporary suspension of tariffs granted to certain countries. S&P Global finalized its most recent model before the U.S. Court of International Trade ruled on May 28 to temporarily halt the implementation of all reciprocal tariffs. As a result, our macroeconomic forecast assumes lower tariffs on China’s products compared with last month’s STEO and 10% tariffs on countries subject to the 90-day temporary suspension. These differences in tariff rates likely have offsetting effects on the macroeconomic forecast.

Natural gas prices, supply and demand balances, liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports, rig counts, storage levels, weather data, and other market activity or events.

Algeria Country Analysis Brief

Jun 5, 2025
Algeria is the second-largest total liquid fuels producer and the largest natural gas producer in Africa, based on EIA’s estimated 2024 production levels. Algeria has been a member of OPEC since 1969 and is a participant in the OPEC+ agreement. Algeria imports very little energy because its domestic consumption is met by domestic oil and natural gas production. Natural gas and oil account for almost all of Algeria's total primary energy consumption.

U.S. Energy-Related Carbon Dioxide Emissions, 2024

May 29, 2025
According to our recently released report on 2024 energy-related CO2 emissions, U.S. CO2 emissions from the consumption of fossil fuels totaled 4,772 million metric tons (MMmt) in 2024, a decrease of less than 1% (23 MMmt) from 2023. Although changes from all sectors were relatively minor, the most notable changes occurred in the residential sector, associated with decreased heating fuel use, and the industrial sector, associated with decreased industrial activity. We based our analysis on preliminary 2024 data from our Monthly Energy Review.

EIA releases new international consumption data sorted by end-use sector and fuel ›

We have released a new international dataset containing end-use consumption data for most countries of the world, with annual data through 2023. The new data set disaggregates the existing total international consumption values into up to 34 end-use sub-sectors, such as construction, mining, refining, residential, and commercial. Our end-use data set categorizes end-use consumption by region, country, fuel, sector, and sub-sector in which the energy is consumed. In the example above, we break down the fuels used in Europe to produce chemicals. More
