Short-Term Energy Outlook

Jan 14, 2025
This edition of our Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO) is the first to include forecasts for 2026. Macroeconomic assumptions are a key driver in the forecast. Our forecast assumes U.S. GDP will grow by 2% in both 2025 and 2026.
Global oil prices. We expect downward oil price pressures over much of the next two years, as we expect that global oil production will grow more than global oil demand. We forecast that the Brent crude oil price will average $74 per barrel (b) in 2025, 8% less than in 2024, and then continue fall another 11% to $66/b in 2026.

Quarterly Coal Report (QCR)—Third-Quarter 2024

Jan 3, 2025
U.S. coal production during the third quarter of 2024 totaled 136.2 million short tons (MMst), which was 15.3% higher than the previous quarter and 6.6% lower than the third quarter of 2023. Third-quarter 2024 U.S. coal exports (27.3 MMst) increased 5.9% from the second quarter of 2024 and increased 10.8% from the third quarter of 2023. U.S. coal imports in the third quarter of 2024 totaled 0.7 MMst. All data for 2023 and previous years are final. All data for 2024 are preliminary.

Natural Gas Monthly

Dec 31, 2024
In October 2024, dry natural gas production decreased year over year for the seventh time in the past eight months. Preliminary dry natural gas production in October 2024 was 3,192 billion cubic feet (Bcf), or 103.0 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d). Production was 1.1% (1.1 Bcf/d) lower in October 2024 than in October 2023 (104.1 Bcf/d). Despite this decrease, dry gas production was the second highest for the month since 1973, the earliest year in this data set. Gross withdrawals increased from October 2023.

U.S. small-scale solar generation has quadrupled in the last decade  ›

We estimate that U.S. generation from small-scale or rooftop solar photovoltaic systems (smaller than 1 megawatt of capacity) has increased from 18,812 gigawatthours (GWh) to 92,979 GWh over the last decade. The four states with the highest generation of small-scale solar in the country—California, Arizona, Texas, and Florida—are in regions with more abundant solar resources. Even though it is in a region with lower solar resources, New York ranks as the fifth-largest rooftop solar generation producer as a result of capacity growth supported by technology improvements and state incentives.
