South Africa Country Analysis Brief

Oct 29, 2024
South Africa was the largest economy in sub-Saharan Africa in 2023 in terms of gross domestic product (GDP), according to the latest estimates by the World Bank Group. The country has a large coal mining industry and mostly uses coal to meet its energy needs. Although South Africa has a high level of access to electricity relative to other sub-Saharan African countries, its electric power sector experiences frequent power outages because of insufficient investment in electricity infrastructure.
