Short-Term Energy Outlook

Aug 6, 2024
Crude oil prices. Although crude oil prices have fallen recently, we continue to expect crude oil prices will rise in the second half of 2024 (2H24). The Brent crude oil spot price ended July at $81 per barrel (b), compared with an average for the month of $85/b. We expect the Brent price will return to between $85/b and $90/b by the end of the year. Rising crude oil prices in our forecast are the result of falling global oil inventories. We estimate global oil inventories decreased by 0.4 million barrels per day (b/d) in 1H24 and will fall by 0.8 million b/d in 2H24. Inventory withdrawals stem in part from ongoing OPEC+ production cuts. Although we expect crude oil prices to rise in the coming months, our forecast for the annual average Brent crude oil price in 2025 is down from a forecast of $88/b in our July STEO, owing mostly to reduced oil consumption.

Jul 31, 2024
In May 2024, dry natural gas production decreased year over year for the third consecutive month. Preliminary dry natural gas production in May 2024 was 3,142 billion cubic feet (Bcf), or 101.4 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d). Production was 2.1% (2.2 Bcf/d) lower in May 2024 than in May 2023 (103.5 Bcf/d); despite this decrease, dry natural gas production was the second highest for the month since 1973, when we began tracking dry production. Gross withdrawals also decreased from May 2023

Most natural gas pipelines built in 2025 connect the South Central United States to supply ›

Natural gas pipeline projects completed in the United States in 2025 increased capacity by approximately 6.3 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d), according to our recently updated Natural Gas Pipeline Projects Tracker. A substantial portion, 85%, or 5.3 Bcf/d, of this new capacity is dedicated to delivering natural gas to the South Central region of the United States. This region includes the Gulf Coast, where much of the nation's growing natural gas demand, particularly from liquefied natural gas (LNG), is concentrated. The new capacity primarily connects both new and existing supply sources to consumers in the region. More
