Kuwait is a member of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), and exported the fourth largest volume of crude oil among the group in 2010. At the same time, Kuwait's economy is one heavily dependent on petroleum export revenues, which account for half of its overall gross domestic product (GDP), 95 percent of total export earnings, and 95 percent of government revenues.

Quarterly coal distribution data for all years are preliminary and will be superseded by the release of the corresponding, Annual Coal Distribution Report.

World crude oil prices initially fell following the June 23 announcement by the International Energy Agency (IEA) that its member countries would release up to 60 million barrels from strategic reserves but then rose above the pre-announcement levels in late June and early July.

Mexico is a major non-OPEC oil producer and the United States' second largest source of oil imports. Mexico produced slightly less than 3 million barrels of oil per day (bpd) in 2010, a 500,000 bpd decrease since 2007. EIA projects that Mexico will become a net oil importer by 2020.

To gain a better understanding of the potential U.S. domestic shale gas and shale oil resources, EIA commissioned INTEK, Inc. to develop an assessment of onshore Lower 48 States technically recoverable shale gas and shale oil resources. This paper briefly describes the scope, methodology, and key results of the report and discusses the key assumptions that underlie the results. There is considerable uncertainty regarding the ultimate size of technically recoverable shale gas and shale oil resources, and the resource estimates will be modified over time as more wells are drilled and completed, technologies evolve, and the long-term performance of shale wells becomes better established.

Crude oil prices mark their highest levels in more than two and a half years. Prices for finished petroleum products register additional significant increases during April. Data covering prime supplier sales of finished products show a 3.0 percent drop in total from last months level, and a 4.0 percent decline from the year-ago level.
State Energy Data System (SEDS): Complete State-Level Estimates Through 2009

Natural Gas Monthly

The June issue of the NGM, featuring data for April 2011, is now available. The June NGM reflects two significant changes in EIA's data reporting.
1) Among the States where natural gas is sold by marketers to residential and commercial customers, only Georgia, New York, and Ohio residential and commercial prices in 2011 are now based on total gas deliveries. As a result of suspending collection of the EIA-910, "Monthly Natural Gas Marketer Survey, in eight States and the District of Columbia," EIA has revised residential and commercial prices in those States for January 2011 forward. Henceforth, only Georgia, New York, and Ohio prices will include data on natural gas sold to customers by energy marketers.
2)Natural Gas Deliveries to All Consumers now includes monthly estimates for vehicle fuel volumes in each State for January 2010 forward.

The June edition provides early highlights of April 2011 electricity data. In April 2011, total electric power generation in the United States increased 4.1 percent compared to April 2010. The average U.S. retail price of electricity increased 1.0 percent in April 2011 compared to the previous year.
Refinery Capacity Report

Data series include fuel, electricity, and steam purchased for consumption at the refinery; refinery receipts of crude oil by method of transportation; current and projected capacities for atmospheric crude oil distillation, downstream charge, production, and storage capacities. Respondents are operators of all operating and idle petroleum refineries (including new refineries under construction) and refineries shut down during the previous year, located in the 50 States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Guam, and other U.S. possessions.

The latest Prime Supplier Report presents data collected through April 2011 on Form EIA-782C, "Monthly Report of Prime Supplier Sales of Petroleum Products Sold for Local Consumption." These data measure primary petroleum product deliveries into the States where they are locally marketed and consumed.
Rail Coal Transportation Rates to the Electric Power Sector

New average annual rail transportation rates and analysis for coal shipments to the electric power sector are based on the carload waybill sample obtained from the U.S. Surface Transportation Board. Data are aggregated across select state-to-state and coal basin-to-state combinations for 2001 to 2008. The data show that average nominal rates for the United States increased by 40 percent between 2001 and 2008 (real rates increased by almost 11 percent during that same time) but that average rates between specific states varied greatly.
