The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a federation of seven different emirates which together comprise the third largest economy in the Middle East behind Saudi Arabia and Iran. The UAE is an important producer of natural gas and oil, ranking seventh globally in total proven reserves of both. The country is also a member of the Organization for Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

The latest EPM issue (January 2011) is now available on EIA's Data are for October 2010, during which net generation in the United States rose fractionally from the October 2009 level. Consumption of coal for power generation fell 4.7 percent compared to October 2009. The average retail price of electricity for October 2010 was 9.87 cents per kilowatthour (kWh), 3.6 percent lower than September 2010 when the average retail price of electricity was 10.24 cents per kWh, and 1.8 percent higher than October 2009, when the price was 9.7 cents per kWh.

Twenty major energy producers reported a 32-percent increase in third-quarter net income relative to the third quarter of 2009 (Q309). This percentage increase in the third quarter of 2010 (Q310) was primarily because net income in Q309 was unusually low. Q310 income was 41-percent lower than the third-quarter average for 2005-2009.

Saudi Arabia Country Analysis Brief

Saudi Arabia has approximately one-fifth of the world's proven oil reserves, and is the largest oil producer and exporter of total petroleum liquids in the world. The country maintains the world's largest crude oil production capacity, estimated by EIA at over 12 million bbl/d at end-2010. That year, the country produced an average of 10.2 million bbl/d of total oil (8.4 million of which was crude). From 2020 to 2024, crude oil and condensate exports from Russia averaged 5.0 million barrels per day (b/d). Exports from Russia in the first half of 2025 (1H25) were 4.3 million b/d (compared with 4.8 million b/d in 2024). Even as crude oil export volumes from Russia have remained relatively high, the destination of these exports has shifted, mainly due to sanctions related to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
