Natural Gas Monthly

May 30, 2014
The May Natural Gas Monthly, with data through March 2014. Preliminary dry gas production for March 2014 of 2,130 billion cubic feet (Bcf), or 68.7 Bcf/day, is the highest on record for any month. Preliminary total consumption for March 2014 dropped to 2,557 Bcf, or 82.5 Bcf per day, from February’s revised 98.3 Bcf/day. However, it is still the highest on record for March, an increase of just under 2% from March 2013. Deliveries of 682 Bcf, or 22.0 Bcf/day, to industrial consumers for March 2014 are slightly lower than last month’s record, on a per-day basis, of 23.7 Bcf/day but are the highest on record for the month of March. Commercial deliveries (418 Bcf, or 13.5 Bcf/day) are the highest ever for March. Residential deliveries of 700 Bcf, or 22.6 Bcf/day, are the highest for March since 1996. Beginning with this edition of the Natural Gas Monthly, Heating Value data are shown in Table 2. Heating value is the average number of British thermal units per cubic foot of natural gas as reported on Forms EIA-857 and EIA-176.

U.S. Crude Oil Production Forecast-Analysis of Crude Types

May 29, 2014
This paper provides a short-term forecast of domestic production by crude type, supplementing the overall production forecast provided in STEO. Forecasts of production by crude type matter for several reasons. First, U.S. crude streams vary widely in quality. Second, the economics surrounding various options for the domestic use of additional domestic oil production are directly dependent on crude quality characteristics. Third, actual or potential export values also vary significantly with quality characteristics.

Working and Net Available Shell Storage Capacity

May 29, 2014
Working and Net Available Shell Storage Capacity as of March 31, 2014 is the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) report containing semi-annual storage capacity data. It includes three tables detailing working and net available shell storage capacity by facility type, product, and PAD District as of March 31, 2014.

U.S. Natural Gas Imports & Exports 2013

May 28, 2014
U.S. net imports of natural gas into the United States fell 14% in 2013, continuing a decline that began in 2007. Robust natural gas production in the United States likely displaced imports, which decreased by 8% in 2013 to 2,883 Bcf. Based on preliminary data for 2013, domestic dry natural gas production increased by 1% to 24,282 billion cubic feet (Bcf), a new record. Abundant production of natural gas helped reduce U.S. reliance on foreign natural gas and helped maintain a high price differential between domestic and foreign markets outside of North America, increasing interest in the potential export of U.S. liquefied natural gas (LNG).

2013 Energy Flows

May 28, 2014
Energy flow diagrams with data for 2013 for total energy, petroleum, natural gas, coal, and electricity. The total energy flow shows that domestic production of fossil fuels was 64.1 quadrillion Btu, accounting for 59 percent of total U.S. energy supply.

Increasing fuel efficiency leads to decreasing gasoline consumption ›

Annual motor gasoline consumption in the United States decreased in 2025 even as vehicle miles traveled (VMT) increased because of increasing fuel efficiency, a trend we forecast will continue in 2026 and 2027. U.S. motor gasoline consumption averaged 8.9 million barrels per day (b/d) in 2025, 1% less than 2024 and 4% less than pre-pandemic demand in 2019. In our April Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO), we estimate that motor gasoline consumption will continue to decline as forecast fuel efficiency increases and VMT growth slows. More
