The average daily spot natural gas price declined about 40% during winter 2019–20 in New England
May 21, 2020
The average spot (wholesale) price of natural gas in New England for winter 2019–20 (November 1, 2019–March 31, 2020) was $3.17 per million British thermal units (MMBtu), down about 40% from $5.40/MMBtu for the winter of 2018–19 based on trends at the Algonquin Gas Transmission (Algonquin) Citygate—a key regional benchmark for natural gas prices in New England. This price was the lowest average price of natural gas since the winter of 2015–16, which (like winter 2019–20) was warmer than normal.

This update will allow all the tables to be published simultaneously. The analysis report has been replaced by a report entitled Introduction and Key Concepts: State Energy-Related Carbon Dioxide Emissions Tables that explains the content of the analysis tables. The data and analysis tables include data through 2017 and are based on the State Energy Data System. The state summary and analysis tables begin in 1990. Tables for each fuel type and sector and detailed tables for individual state emissions by fuel and sector go back to 1980. This page also includes methodology documentation.

Short-Term Energy Outlook
May 12, 2020
Although all market outlooks are subject to many risks, the May edition of EIA’s Short-Term Energy Outlook remains subject to heightened levels of uncertainty because the effects on energy markets of mitigation efforts related to the 2019 novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) are still evolving. Reduced economic activity related to the COVID-19 pandemic has caused significant changes in energy supply and demand patterns. Crude oil prices, in particular, have fallen significantly since the beginning of 2020, largely driven by reduced oil demand because of COVID-19 mitigation efforts. Despite the April agreement between the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and partner countries (OPEC+) to reduce production levels beyond the end of the STEO forecast period, crude oil prices have remained at some of their lowest levels in more than 20 years. Uncertainties persist across EIA’s outlook for other energy sources, including natural gas, electricity, coal, and renewables.

EIA reports first triple-digit net natural gas storage injection since October 2019
May 7, 2020
In EIA's Weekly Natural Gas Storage Report (WNGSR) published on May 7, 2020, EIA reported a net injection for the Lower 48 states of 109 billion cubic feet (Bcf)—the biggest net injection since September 27, 2019. The net injection was 35 Bcf more than the typical injection for this particular week, on average, for the past five years (2015-2019). The overall surplus of working natural gas inventory compared with the five-year average is now 395 Bcf.

Distributed Generation, Battery Storage, and Combined Heat and Power System Characteristics and Costs in the Buildings and Industrial Sectors
May 5, 2020
Distributed generation refers to onsite, behind-the-meter generation of energy. This often includes electricity from renewable energy systems such as solar photovoltaics and small wind turbines, but it can also include electricity and captured waste heat from combined heat and power (CHP) systems in the buildings and industrial sectors. EIA works with technology experts to project distributed generation and CHP equipment cost and performance characteristics. Always available by request, these reports help EIA increase transparency for some of the most important assumptions used for Annual Energy Outlook building energy generation projections.
Northeast Regional Energy Efficiency Program and Measure Data
May 4, 2020
Energy efficiency (EE) incentives offered by electric and natural gas utilities and state EE organizations are an important component of evolving state and local EE policies. To inform EIA’s assumptions for its Annual Energy Outlook, EIA contracted with the Northeast Energy Efficiency Partnerships (NEEP) to update its Regional Energy Efficiency Database (REED) and to collect detailed measure-level information on EE program incentives from selected utilities. The report focuses on utilities and state EE organizations in states that were not featured in NEEP’s previous FY 2018 report.
