Quarterly Coal Report (QCR)—Fourth-Quarter 2021

U.S. coal production during the fourth quarter of 2021 totaled 146.7 million short tons (MMst), which was 1% lower than the previous quarter and 9.4% higher than the fourth quarter of 2020. Fourth-quarter 2021 U.S. coal exports (21.7 MMst) increased 4.5% from the third-quarter 2021 level and increased 13.7% from the fourth-quarter 2020 level. U.S. coal imports in the fourth quarter of 2021 totaled 1.7 MMst. All data for 2020 and previous years are final. All data for 2021 are preliminary.

In 2021, Colombia was South America’s largest coal producer and second-largest petroleum and other liquids producer after Brazil. The country is also a significant oil exporter; in 2021, it was the fifth-largest crude oil exporter to the United States. Columbia uses hydropower for most of its electricity needs. Despite being a major coal producer, Colombia uses very little coal domestically, instead exporting most of its coal production.

In January 2022, dry natural gas production increased year over year for the month for the 10th consecutive month. The preliminary level for dry natural gas production in January 2022 was 2,943 billion cubic feet (Bcf), or 94.9 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d). This level was 2.1 Bcf/d (2.3%) higher than January 2021 (92.8 Bcf/d) and the second-highest level for the month since 1973, when we began tracking dry natural gas production. Gross withdrawals also increased from January 2021

U.S. Movements of Crude Oil By Rail

Monthly data on rail movements of crude oil have been updated for January 2022. Crude oil movements by rail have significantly increased during the past five years. The data on crude-by-rail (CBR) movements are also fully integrated with EIA’s existing monthly petroleum supply statistics, which already include crude oil movements by pipeline, tanker, and barge.

The 2020 RECS provides household characteristics and energy usage indicators for the estimated 123.5 million homes in the United States in 2020. The first release of 2020 RECS data includes preliminary estimates on the structural and geographic characteristics of homes, types of electronics and appliances used within them, lighting characteristics, demographic characteristics, and household energy insecurity.

Data in the March 2022 Electric Power Monthly (EPM) are for January 2022, during which net generation in the United States Rose 8.0 percent from the January 2021 level. Consumption of natural gas for power generation was up 11.5 percent compared to January 2021. The average residential retail price of electricity was up 8.1 percent from the January 2021 level.

Australia, a significant producer of both coal and liquefied natural gas (LNG), exports the majority of its energy production. Australia’s energy exports, excluding uranium, accounted for approximately 81% of its total energy production in 2020. Australia was also the world’s largest coal exporter based on energy content and the second-largest exporter based on weight, behind Indonesia. In addition, it was the largest exporter of LNG in the world that year.
