MEDIA ADVISORY:
EIA is suspending data collection for its Prime Supplier Report and portions of its Petroleum Marketing Monthly
The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) is suspending data collection for two petroleum-related surveys: EIA-782A, Refiners'/GasPlant Operators' Monthly Petroleum Product Sales Report, and EIA-782C, Monthly Report of Prime Supplier Sales of Petroleum Products Sold for Local Consumption. The two surveys primarily support data publication in its Petroleum Marketing Monthly (PMM) and Prime Supplier Report (PSR). Persistent software issues related to an IT systems failure in June 2022 have prevented EIA from processing data related to the PMM and PSR. After an extensive evaluation, the agency determined that the most prudent course is to suspend data collection for the EIA-782A and EIA-782C data because it has no short-term remedy. By suspending the EIA-782A and EIA-782C rather than canceling them, it leaves EIA the option of restoring the two surveys in the future. EIA will continue to update the PMM crude oil prices section (data tables 1, 1A, 18 – 27). "Suspending surveys is not something we do lightly, but it is an important step in this case given the time and effort required to reconstitute the data processing system,” said EIA Administrator Joe DeCarolis. “Continuing to collect data, in the meantime, places an unnecessary burden on our respondents and that was a driving factor in our decision."
