1Municipal Solid Waste net generation is allocated according to the biogenic and non-biogenic components of the fuel; however, all Municipal Solid Waste summer capacity is classified as Renewable. * = Absolute percentage less than 0.05. - = No data reported. Notes: Totals may not equal sum of components due to independent rounding. Other: Blast furnace gas, propane gas, other manufactured and waste gases derived from fossil fuels, non-biogenic municipal solid waste, batteries, chemicals, hydrogen, pitch, purchased steam, sulfur, tire-derived fuel, and miscellaneous technologies. Other Renewable: Wood, black liquor, other wood waste, biogenic municipal solid waste, landfill gas, sludge waste, agriculture byproducts, other biomass, geothermal, solar thermal, photovoltaic energy, and wind. Plants in State
Operator: Virginia Electric Power Company
Location and Service Territory: The North Anna nuclear power station is on a 1,075-acre site on a peninsula near Mineral, a small town in Louisa County, Virginia.
Construction Cost: $3.861 billion (2007 USD)2
Reactor Descriptions: Both of the units are Westinghouse, three-loop, pressurized water reactors.
Cooling System: To supply cooling water for the plant, a dam was erected in 1971 on the North Anna River to create Lake Anna. The water is drawn from Lake Anna in a once-through cooling system.
Operator: Virginia Electric Power Company
Location and Service Territory: The Surry plant, named for the county in which it is located, is on an 840 acre site, Gravel Neck Peninsula, 7 miles south of historic Williamsburg, Virginia. Upstream of the peninsula is tidal river and downstream is an estuary. At the tip of the estuary is a wildlife refuge.
Construction Cost: $1.868 billion (2007 USD)2
Reactor Descriptions: The reactors are Westinghouse three-loop pressurized water reactors, each holding 157 fuel assemblies.
Cooling System: Cooling water for the once-through cooling system is drawn through a channel dredged in the bottom of the James River.
